It all started one day when I was looking for a program, and I clicked on the wrong website. It asked if I wanted to accept something from xyz company. Without even thinking I hit OK. (I always hit no on those things)

No I get popups left and right. I goto Slashdot and get a popup. I goto Anandtech I get a pop up. I tried ad-aware and it found some spyware and it said it removed it. (It didn't) I Click CTRL-Alt-Del and look at the running processes, but nothing seems out of the ordinary to me.

So finally I gave up, and formatted. Formatting always does the trick right? Wrong I am still getting those popups. All I have on this computer is XP, AIM, Star Wars Galaxies and Sim City 4. I know none of those programs have anything installed, cause I have them all installed on my other puter and it's just fine.

I don't know what to do.

Any help would be appreciated (figuring most people would be techies here, could get help)

Tried Adaware. Didn't work. I haven't tried the google toolbar. I generally don't like those things, like the yahoo toolbar. Does the google one stop popups?

Go with the Google Tool Bar. It works great. I've been using it since they came out with Beta version. You can turn it on and off by clicking on the toolbar button for sites where you may need the popup.

I did format everything it was all 1 partition. I don't know why they were still there. But the google toolbar did the trick already it's blocked 10 of those popups

Just download Mozilla Firebird.

I get exactly 0 popups. None. Never. It's like the guys over at Mozilla are living inside my computer with giant flyswatters putting the smackdown on the bad guys.

:p

Seriously, though, this is the most efficient option.

disable windows messanger, run spybot search and destroy and goto adshield.org and get the demo which blocks popups without sending where you go to google

Google Toolbar doesn't stop everything, thus I recommend PopUpCop. Much better

Run a program called CWShredder. And install a prog named Spywareblaster. Like mentioned before, you should disable windows messaging service. You can get proggies for this at www.grc.com

Nope Google Toolbar doesn't work for these. :( I deleted the partition and reformatted and created a new partition. I have no clue what to do. I can't go with Firebird, cause this is the wifes computer and she gets pissed when I put anything on it that isn't generic (ie. Internet Explorer)

I have never seen this before I know I formatted, and I deleted the partitions. Cause I deleted windows, installed linux, she got pissed that she doesn't know how to use linux. Then I installed Windows back on. They are still there. These pop ups have the title

"--- - Microsoft Internet Explorer"

I think since Google isn't catching these and they are on pages that do not have popups, that it's an adware program.

If you formatted, reinstalled Windows, reinstalled your stuff and the popups are back then this can mean only one thing. YOUR STUFF IS CONTAMINATED !!!!! Sorry to shout but had to make that point. :(
