Hi, I have a Radeon 9800 pro that has a floppy connector for power to the card. I find that it is quite difficult to remove the floppy connector as it seems very fragile. Does anyone know of a trick or tips to disconnect the floppy connector safely?

Err, floppy connector on a 9800? They made them have 4 pin molex from what I know (and my own card).

Just pull very gently and wiggle slightly from side to side, not too hard, and not too much.
That's all I did.

Yes the 4 pin molex, which I believe is the same as the 4 pin molex used on floppy drives. Thanks for the quick response.

Not sure what you are talking about Rage187, all the floppy drives I have ever seen use a smaller connector than the ones used by hard drives and optical drives.

I just gave up on removing the big 4 pin connector on my Sapphire 9800np. I was affraid I was going to break it.

The snowman is correct. Molex connectors are used on all hard drives (excluding sata) and optical drives. The floppy used the smaller 3 pin.

erm....I thought the floppy connecters were 4 pin also. At any rate, the 9800's used the bigger 4 pin molex connectors (same as HD/ CDRW, etc), the 9700's used the smaller and more fragile 3 or 4 pin floppy style connector. I know what you mean about them being tight, I had one that I sold on ebay that I actually left the adapter cable plugged right in to the card, because I was sure that it was going to break the surface mounts on the card if I pulled it. It was on that tight. I'd try a small screwdriver, prying one side and then the other until you eventually get it. They can be a pain in the @ss. Drink a beer and take your time....

Just hang on tight to the base of where the molex cable is inserted into your card, making sure you're applying pressure to the card very lightly while you're holding the power base, and with your other hand very gently wiggle the molex cable until it comes out. I get the nagging feeling that if you don't apply a bit of pressure to the card while holding the base, that it will rip right off the card, but I'm just paranoid :)

hmm, the floppy on my work computer takes the standard 4-pin molex.

EDIT: and another one takes a funky little plug which I guess is what you are referring too.

Some 9800s had the floppy power plug.
Yeah, the 128-bit "9800 Pro", some vanilla 9800's, and 9800SE used the smaller floppy style connectors.

The snowman is correct. Molex connectors are used on all hard drives (excluding sata) and optical drives. The floppy used the smaller 3 pin.
- My WD Raptors have both the new style SATA power connector and the 4 pin molex, you can use either of them (but not both)
-The floppy connector has 4 wires also, but it is smaller. I beleive that these are also technically "molex" connectors as well, just a different size.

...As far as removing it goes, the connector should just be sleeved over the thick rod-like wires that are coming out of the PCB. These won't come off very easily, however I have actually slipped the entire connector off of the wires. No biggie, just slip it back on, just make sure you put it back on the same way it was or you will reverse the polarity next time you plug in a power supply. You can see what I mean here...

notice that the connector is crooked... That is because it's just slipped over the actual metal rods. As long as you don't break those, you're ok. If the connector comes off with the plug, just put it back on.
