Hi,

I am trying to help a friend whose motherboard died. She bought a new computer and I have the old hard drive and I am trying to recover her files for her.

The contacts are each in an individual file named in the format name.contact. I need to convert them to something like a CSV file. Windows 7 does not seem to have an email program (I still run XP). I found some conversion programs but since I don't have Windows Mail on my system they won't work. Others will only do one contact at a time. Some others you have to pay for to see if they work.

Does anyone know of a good program to try, hopefully free.

thanks
Lee

Does she have a new computer? What OS? I'm assuming she's going from Vista to Win7?

She can install Windows Live Mail on the Win7 PC and import the old data files into that. You'd just have to get her the data files on a disk or USB stick:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/...-contacts-and-calendar-into-windows-live-mail

"Outlook Express and Windows Mail aren't included with Windows 7. Instead, you can use Windows Live Mail—a free program that is part of Windows Live Essentials. Windows Live Mail works with most e‑mail accounts, and you can import your e‑mail, contacts, and calendar from Outlook Express or Windows Mail into Windows Live Mail. With Windows Live Mail you can access all your information from any computer with an Internet connection."

My understanding is you can also install the Vista version of "Windows Mail" into Windows 7 if you locate the installer files.

Yes, it is a new computer. She went from Vista to Windows 7.

I installed Windows Live Mail and was able to get her old emails imported but was not able to get her address book imported.

When I try to import the address book it says I can import a WAB, VCF, CSV file, or Current Windows User. I don't have the first 3 so I tried current Windows user and it did not find it nor ask me where it is. Any other suggestions please.

thanks
