Help Recommend a thin and light Laptop.

Ok, well my ibook died, and its time to get a laptop.

I'm thinking that a thin & light laptop is probably best.

Used or new.

Light(around 5lbs)
Good battery life (3-4 hours preferred)
14inch screen (12/13 inch considered)
Internal or external drives
No need for anything more than an external cd(for installation of software)
Internal wireless (802.11b necessary)
Video does not matter(2d stuff only)
Speed equivlent to about a 800mhz athlon desktop(or better)
Under $1100(prefer to spend closer to $700)

I know that there are probably a lot of laptops that fall into this category.
The dell inspiron 500m seems not to be a bad deal for $1080 using education discount
1.3 PM, 14 SXGA+ lcd, 256 ddr, 20 gig, dvd/cdrw, etc..


Any recommendations? What might be comparable that I could find a good price on used?

Take a look at the Fujitsu S and P series. You might find a very good used/refurbished deal.

I like the ibook, and no need to get pelted for suggesting it.

I'm just not sure its a what we need. The powerbooks(12/15inch) are very attractive, but too expensive.

They weight of the 14 inch ibook is more than comparable PCs, and the price premium (over comparable PCs) makes it not a great fit.

There are a lot more PC laptops in the $800 range than I expected with enough speed, screen size, etc..

Compaq's X1000 is not a "thin-n-light" at 6.5lb and 1.3inch thick. T40 at 4.9lb and 1in is the upper bound for "thin n light"

i have the ibook and its great, i don't think there's a better laptop overall that you can get for the same price (~$1000)

if you're looking for a real small laptop try the toshiba portege 2000 (or the newer 2002) one of my close friends has it and it works pretty well. it might be a little small though, considering that it's smaller than a 1subject sprial bound notebook, heh.
