Help/Question on Americas Army-Opening Ports

I'm going to apoligize ahead of time because this question should probably be asked on the Americasarmy forum itself, but the blocking software my company uses here at work blocks almost every single thing game related. I figured if I posted on here I'd get some good technical help so by the time I got home tonight I could try it.

So in Americas Army I went thru the basic training and want to take the next step. Anyway, I can't connect on multiplayer, even though I opened up all the necessary ports (I think) on my router. Now I'm pretty new to routers, networking etc, but I'm pretty sure I've done everything right. (I have a D-Link 524 router by the way). Anything I'm missing here, that I need to do besides opening up the 5 or so ports that the game FAQ lists? I tried going thru GameSpy as well and I can connect to gamespy but still can't get into a multi.

Was installing gamespy necessary/a good idea? All help appreciated for this newbie.

I know, just from my personal experience, that I didn't need to actually open up any ports. I suspect that's neccesary only if you want to host a game. Your router should be smart enough that when you send out information through a port, it should permit the responses to pass.

Unless you're using a more aggressive firewall, that blocks all traffic bi-directionally unless eplicitly permitted.

Good luck with the game - I had a blast playing basic training, but was severely brutalized once I tried to actually play online. I am traumatized to do this day from that experience. =)

I think I actually found my answer on the D-Link web site, didn't think to check there last night (they've actually got a great knowledge base on there, helped me set up my PS2 etc). I think I made a mistake opening up the ports, need to fix one thing and I think I'll be all set.

As for taking a beating, I'm sure I will, but I'd like to try it!!!

Okay, correct ports are open, everything looks good, still nothing. Then I found something on one of the AA boards telling me to switch (at the multiplayer menu) to the gamespy server instead of the default Anaconda server. Finally see something although when I twice try to join a mission it just seems to hang, and then boot me back to the main menu. After this I cannot make a connection at all, in fact my internet connection is "dead". This happened the night before when I tried to go directly thru gamespy. I had to re boot, even unplug the modem and router to do a complete "restart".

Anybody else have this problem, seems to be GameSpy related to me?
