HELP! question about formatting hard drive

I have two hard drives, one 80 and one 160gb. The 80gb was split into two partitions, 20 and 60. The 20 was my OS partition. I just recently added the 160gb and I decided I wanted to reformat my os partition. I just formatted it and installed the new os, but it doesn't recognize my 160gb! it sees it as "unpartitioned space". I had some very important files on that hard drive, is there any way I can recover it? I don't understand why the files on the 160gb are gone, since I only formatted the 20gb partition.

Heh had the same thing happen to me (with an 80 and 160 coincidentally). The 80 was originally formatted using some dell tool and when I reformatted, I did so with the maxtor maxblast utility. Anyways, the 160 ended up being unrecognizable so I had to use a file recovery tool to grab everything off. Since it seems like the partition table have been messed up (and not a hardware failure) I'd recommend using a file recovery tool like PC Inspector file recovery.
