I want to put a fan on my V3 2000 to overclock it. Should I have the fan blow air onto the heatsink or suck air off the heatsink for best results?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

Suck.

Just out of curiosity, what fan are you using? I have a V3 1000 that I need some sort of heatsink on and I am noot sure what to try...

I bought a very cheap fan that's the same size as my V3 2k heatsink. On my other video card (Radeon DDR LE) I put an old Pentium fan on it (486 fans work well too). Are you sure suck is the best? Many CPU fans blow onto the heatsink (it pushes the hot air out the sides of the heatsink and is very efficient).

Well on second thought...damn it! I am not sure. My first instinct is suck, but you you have me second guessing. I say suck as that is most efective on most CPUs HSF as well as how one should set their PSU and exhaust fans. Do a search in here and in the overclocking forum (might also try Deja.com) and see what you come up with.

Sorry for the confusion.

Go for Blow. That's what the Blorb on my Geforce2MXR is doing. Nice happy temperatures and overclock :)

I think I'm gonna try blow (my first instinct... no pun intended!). I think I read that it's the best in this situation, but I can't quite rememeber. If the blue orb blows air onto the heatsink, it makes sense that another video card cooler would. The heatsink is quite small, and there's not much air in the gaps/fins of the HS to suck out. Also, I guess, if it blows the air onto the HS, the hot air will go out the sides, and my fan at the back of the case will blow some of that hot air out the case. Damn, cooling is so important to the function of a computer!

Thanks for all the feedback. It's clear that there's advantages to both!

Blow.

You want to cool the chip by forcing air thru the heatsink fins so it cools off.
