I've been messing with this problem for the past few weeks. I can get the monitor to go into screen saver mode, but it never goes to sleep. I've adjusted the Windows Power settings and have also updated the Ati drivers from 8.8's to 8.11's hoping it would cure this little annoyance, but to no avail.

Help!

Uh...Because that would involve physically turning off the monitor?

To the OP: is this a fresh install of your OS? Are you using XP/Vista? How sensitive is your mouse? Laser mice have a tendency to pick up random movements and will cause your LCD to stay awake.

I wouldn't mind shutting it down on my own, but I know that my wife will forget...plus it should just work.

Rally: This is on XP. The install is about 5 months old. I have an MX518 and you do make a good point. I wonder if it's causing the trouble. Maybe I'll unplug it and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you have changed video cards in those 5 months, you should definitely reformat. It's almost a guarantee you'll have some sort of small issue. I just installed my HD3850 within the past 24 hours and it's already giving me lag issues that it shouldn't be giving for a card of its calibre. I'll be reformating this thing for sure in the next week or so.

there are some programs that can actually block suspend modes for computers.

I have written software to detect and fix this problem actually.

Windows boxes in power management have a suspend time out. you can set the action for what happens when this "idle" period happens with windows powermanagement. so it will force the machine to sleep , power off, or do nothing. monitors can only "sleep".

some programs cause the sleep message to be blocked. so then the action never occurs. i know uTorrent is one of them, and so is the little tray thing for some dvd player apps (it hink win dvd for one) . so maybe sure you havent installed some of those piece sof software lately. utorrent i know you can shutoff that feature (since they dont seem to have coded it quite right).

my experience is that video card drivers can really mess this up...
Reformat and install latest drivers, and pray.
