help - probs adding second HD

ok im a newb. i have 2 HDs, cd burner and cd-rom
in my athalon/K7M system. I set the 2nd HD as IDE2 slave,
so here is my overall config:

HD1 - IDE 1 - master
CD1(burner) - IDE 1 - slave

HD2 - IDE 2 - master
CD2 - IDE2 - slave

are these correct? i am not sure why windows isnt recognizing the second HD by assigning a drive letter (even though bios has detected it)

any help would be appreciated,
thx BEN

what OS are u running?

also, i thought for some reason that b/c you have two HD's running as master, ther would be a conflict.

what burner are u using? i think for better performance, you should set the CD burner as the master on ide2.

maybe this will help:

HD1 - IDE1 - master
HD2 - IDE1 - slave

CD1(burner) - IDE2 - master
CD2 - IDE2 - slave.

again...i'm not quite sure...but wortha shot maybe

have you fdisked & formatted the new hdd??

Ucvb6 - No, no, no! Keep the Hard Drives and CD devices on separate channels. This is especially useful if you want to do on-the-fly burning because it keeps the pipelines open between the two CD devices. Also, put the burner on the channel opposite from where you normally burn from. If that is the booting hard drive, then putting the burner on the secondary IDE would be a good idea. Whether they are master or slave doesn't matter too much as long as you've got the booting HD as primary master. Suggested config:

HD1 - IDE 1 - master
CD2 - IDE2 - slave

HD2 - IDE 2 - master
CD1(burner) - IDE 2 - slave

As far as getting the OS to recognize new drve, have you formatted it???
There should not be any problem having the HDs as master on each channel. You could have four hard disks hooked up if you wanted to.

oops...sorry bdcrisp, hopefully you havent started taking apart yopur computer.

thanks muntz for the help. 🙂

Be sure to check the jumpers on the HD's so that they are set to the appropriate master/slave/whatever.

If the bios is recognizing the drive, then the jumpers are probably already ok. I'm betting the new drive has not been formatted yet, so windows can't see it.

I am having a similar problem. I'm trying to add my HD from last year into my new system. I'm running an ABIT KT7-A/RAID board with an IBM 75GXP with WIN98se. The new HD and the old HD will both boot up individually, however, when I have the IBM as the primary and try to add the Quantum as a slave Windows won't see the second drive. The bios does and the Highpoint controller does, but once in Windows the 2nd drive isn't listed. Any ideas??

Thanks!

Yes I second that motion!

Be sure the new HD is set to MASTER and not SINGLE drive, there is a difference.

I've tried every combo of settings on both drives and the bios sees em, the highpoint controller sees em, but the dang Win98se WON'T see em both!!?? Gggrrr... Any other things to try?

Thanks!

My burner (tdk 12x10x32) is supposed to only be the master on the secondary channel. I don't know if that will help but wtf. Also, have you tried just installing the 2 hd? Try this setup....hd1 primary master....cd2 primary slave.....burner secondary master.....hd2 secondary slave.

Hope that helps,
trav

Check the setting also of the HD controller to make sure both channels are enabled. This is after you checked for all the jumpers and cables.😎
