Help! Problems with P4X 266 Via chipset mobo....

Quick story: I work in a lab where we have several "generic" PCs, and recently we decided to reformat and reinstall Win2k on one of them.

The installation went just fine, but at the end we had two problems:

1. The onboard sound does not work, and it did before the reformat and reinstall of Win2k.

2. When shutting down, the computer will not turn itself off, rather we get the "it is now safe to turn off your computer" message, when this used to just shutdown properly before.

What's silly is that we can't seem to find out which company actually made this mobo. The only screened lettering is "P4X 266 PE 11 Rev. B", with no apparent markings of a manufacturer. We know it's a Via chipset though.

We have tried installing the Via "4 in 1" drivers from the Via website, but those don't seem to fix either problem.

Is there something that I'm missing with this? Is there an obvious area/item that we're not checking? If someone could help us out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Run sandra and that may tell you who made the board. Also VIA had boards made for themselves, so check the pics out there and see if one matchs.

Yea the PE11 looks like a VIA board

Okay, thanks to the help of KGBMAN, the computer will now shutdown properly. But we still have the problem with lack of sound output. Any more suggestions on that?

I'm pretty sure the mobo has AC97 sound...
