HELP.....Problems with my TV

Ok, I was watching television one morning...and all of a sudden ( instantly ) it started changing channels by itself ( as if someone was behind my with a remote ).

If I bring up the menu, the highlighted bar runs through all the options.

It changes channels like its surfing. Then it will automatically stop on a channel, and start raising the volume by itself.

Now...If while its changing channels, and I hold in a volume button or the menu button, IT STOPS.

The remote don't have any batteries as I taken them out to try it that way.

It only changes channels going down, never up.

Anyone know anything about this...or is my TV possessed ?

Either:

1) Something is transmitting IR that it is interpreting as remote commands. In this case, covering up the remote sensor (a little black square on the front, usually) will make it stop.

2) More likely, the electronics in the front-panel controls are borked. Take it to a repair place and have them open it up and take a look. It might be as simple as the 'channel down' button being jammed or something.

Yea, I tried covering up the sensor on the front, with black electrical tape, which didnt work, so tried aluminum foil and it didnt work either. Called RCA, and they S U C K...........Repair is going to be an average of $500.

I checked the buttons myself, no buttons are stuck, they all press and click.

HMM....maybe ill say screw RCA and never buy from them again, especially after reading this.........

We bought two 32 in 32V432T at Wal-Mart six months ago for $250.00 each. Hers went first, turning on and off, and autoprogramming on its own.

Her set is on it's second trip to a repair center. Mine started the same thing today. Power on and off by itself and starts to autoprogram by itself. What gives? These are only months old! Any suggestions on repair? What crap!

No help from RCA/Thomson, they could care less now that they are selling thier surplus through Wal-Mart. One is still in the shop for over a month now don't know what to do about the second one yet.

I could of bought a bigger brand new (not RCA) TV for all this money now. Don't buy this set, I was told this is a common problem with these models.

They need to recall them. I will never ever buy from RCA again. I also have a RCA/DVD player that is a piece of junk too.

If it's not under warranty, you might see if you can find a local electronics/TV repair place to take a look. If it's something like a faulty contact switch, it will cost a lot less than $500 to fix, and you won't have to pay for shipping.

I Had a similar problem years ago with a 27-inch Toshiba. The tuner was bad. Luckily, it coincided with the introduction of Digital cable TV in my area, so I bought the cable box and plugged it into the S-Video input on the TV set, thus bypassing the tuner.

You could try to isolate the problem by using the tuner of a VCR to change channels and plugging the VCR output into your TV's composite input. The auto-channel changing should be gone, and you will see what will happen to the sound.

Ok, ill try that. Is composite the same thing as A/V cables ?

Yes, and same as "RCA cable/connector". One yellow for video, plus usually red/white for audio.
