Help! Problems with Hardware Configuration

I don't know if I'm supposed to do this or not, so please forgive me if I'm not supposed to.

I wanted to link a problem that I posted in the Technical Support forum. Here's the link.

If you don't want to read the link, I'm basically having a problem getting my system to recognize my cd rom or any cd rom drive so I can install an OS.

I did a Maxtor 40 gb hdd and Maxtor (Promise) ATA controller card upgrade on my POS Emachines system and now I can't get the system to recognize my cd rom if I have it on the controller card or on the mobo IDE channels.

I think I have my BIOS set up properly. I don't think that there is much to it anyway.

I've tried 2 cd roms in this system to see if the cd rom went bad on me in the upgrade (which I doubted) and as it turns out, the very same thing is happening. As a matter of fact, it's telling me that it's the same drive, which it is not.

Also, in the BIOS, I have autoselect selected and it's not detecting any drives when I have them hooked up to the mobo IDE channels.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this POS!

I'm getting very angry with this system because I don't know where to turn to for help.

I figured that this forum gets more traffic than the other one because I posted the questions this morning and only got 2 responses.

Thanks and sorry if I broke any rules by linking to my other post on the other forum.

Thanks!

No manual. Got the machine as a refurb. It worked beautifully before I tried upgrading the hdd. Now it won't let me go back to the original hdd. It acts the same way with both drives. It won't detect the drive on the mobo IDE channels, but will detect it on the ATA controller card. I don't get support for my cd rom with the onboard IDE controller or the ATA controller card, though the cd rom will at least spin up with it on the controller card.

It seems to me that the mobo IDE channels aren't recognizing anything. Is there something in the BIOS that I have to pay particular attention to in order to make sure that my IDE drives are being recognized? My BIOS is an American Megatrends btw with a 1999 date on it. I think it's version 1.21.

If someone can't help me, can they please refer me to someone in the Chicago area? I'm about to give up and throw this thing in the closet.
