Help.....Problems installing a new motherboard

Hello

I have a p3 800 system with a gigabyte ga-6vx7-4x mb that has been functioning fine but for various reasons wanted to put in a new board.

I now have an Intel D815EPEA2. I removed the gigabyte and gently installed the Intel. I have done one board before this but I had no problems. The P3 800eb installed easily, plugged in the cpu fan and attatched the power and 1 memory dimm in slot 0.

The board powered up fine but would not beep/ post, which I thought it was supposed to do. It powered up but got no further. I tried reseating the board but got the same results.Tried with the video caed in and no change. What can I try? I would appreciate any help/ suggestions.

I'll ask this just in case, did you make sure that all the mounting posts lined up and that there weren't any extras? If there are, it would short out your mobo. Also, make sure that your psu is fully plugged in, I just built a system with that mobo and it required a little extra effort to get it to "click"--I had to support the underside of mobo so I could push a little harder...

Also, make sure your memory DIMM is really well seated and locked tightly.

An added thought . . . is your old memory the type required by the new board?

Thank you for the suggestions.

I have 6 screw down posts and I used all. I did try and reseat the board twice, just in case there was a short. I rechecked the cpu also.

The memory is pc133 128 meg stick

Did not check the power cable, will try that. I had this on another board replace and it was a cpu incompatibity but beyond that it worked great.

This one has me at a standstill.

Any more ideas? thank you

I did get it booted and running. I am pretty sure what I did was take the 128 dimm out and replace it with the 256 dimm, that did the trick. So the ram was the problem BUT NOW

I got it booted and into win ME, it installed all the drivers BUT

The hard drive led stays lit all the time and the cd rom lite is always green and the cd doesnt work.( it IS accessing a🙂. The hd is ok since the pc is booting.
I tried reversing the CD cable but it did not help and its connections are ok. After the normal boot up I went into the bios and it was NOT showing the CD( autodetect)

I would check the cd in device mgr but even though win me boots up nicely,, if I try to access a program it FREEZES. I cant even ctrl.alt.del to get a screen. So win me gets started but I cant use it.!!!!

Any ideas to move me along??? ( thanks for the help so far, I am alone and its great to have some support!!!

Check to see that your MOBO bios supports the problem devices.
Also, see if there is a flash update for the MOBO bios...

the fact that it doesnt auto detect the old cd rom might not be a problem, in my old comp the bios auto detect feature didnt find the cd rom either, and it still worked fine.

How do you have your HD,CDROM and any other IDE devices set up? (ie. channel?, master/slave?) You might want to try playing with that configuration. I had a problem recently when moving to a new motherboard. I previously had my HD alone on IDE0 with the jumpers set as master. My new MB wouldn't work properly till I changed the jumpers to single.

D.

I think I have the cd set as slave on ide2. I may replace the cable. If the cd is not found by the board then it cant be why win me freezes.

Also the HD works fine to boot up into win me but trying to use a program freezes, I am still lost, just need to try tinkering more i guess.

I got an Intel board since I thought it would be trouble free. Its nice but the documentation has been very poor, not impressive at all.

Sounds like your going fron a VIA chipset to an Intel chipset without a format. Maybe you should put the old board back in. Save any important data.
Than install the new setup with a fresh fdisk and format.

So, the only device you have on the IDE2 is the CDROM set as a slave? Well, that won't work. If you just failed to mention what else was connected, you should notice that I suggested you list ALL the devices you have set up on your IDE channels. It might not make any difference, but if you really want help you should supply more complete information.
Just because the CDROM isn't recognized by your BIOS doesn't mean it can't cause a problem if it's sharing the channel with another device.
Try removing all the IDE devices and just boot with a floppy. If everything seems okay, then it may be a problem with some part of your IDE setup.

You shouldn't have any problems switching your HD from one chipset to another, unless that chipset has some problem.

I disagree. His operating system is trying to use the VIA drivers, but the hardware is no longer there.

Windows ME.....not a CLEAN install.....VIA Chipset to an Intel chipset.....whew.....
It's a wonder it boots at all.
I would also recommend a reformat and clean install...................
2 weeks ago I attempted to upgrade from a ZX Intel chipset to a 815 Intel
chipset using Win98SE. I removed all the system devices from the device manager,
installed the new MB/CPU, and booted up. Everything went fine and had some
"yellows and question marks" in the device manager. But this was to be expected
as Win98SE didn't come with 815 infs as the 815 chipset is newer than the OS.
So I installed the Intel INF utility that I had downloaded from the Intel web site.
Now the device manager looks great! Now the systems LOCKS RANDOMLY!!!!!!
Geesch.....Had to reformat and reinstall.......Currently using the generic Win98SE
drivers but it's stable and running fine (until I upgrade to XP later.......)
