I have a desktop PC with a DVD-ROM drive as "Master" on IDE cable. When I added a CD-RW drive, it would not recognize it if I install it as a Slave drive. But, if I switch it around, then it works (i.e. CD-RW as Master and DVD-ROM as Slave). In summary, DVD-ROM drive works as a Master or as a Slave; but the CD-RW drive works as a "Master" only. Does anybody know why? Is it possible to fix it such that I can install CD-RW drive as Slave? Thanks in adavnce.

this should be pretty straight forward

check the jumpers behind your cdrw there should be a guide where to put the jumpers if you want it to be a slave or a master, master with a slave. master alone. slave ect

check if you have a "cable select cable" then all you have to do is switch the jumpers on your cdrw and dvd to "cable select and you should be able to place them any where on the cable and the cable will determine which is the master or slave.

good luck

Just out of curisoity which are you so intent on keeping your DVD as master? Its not going to make a difference which drive's the master or slave, the devices will operate at the slowest speed on the cable (that's just how IDE works).

Other than that, AnMig got it for you...

I had already checked the jumper settings. I tried the Cable Select setting also. None of them worked. The only combination it works is when:

The DVD-ROM drive is on the "Slave end" of IDE cable with jumper set to "Slave" or "Cable Select" and
The CD-RW drive is on the "Master end" of the IDE cable and the jumper set to "Master" or "Cable Select".
