I tried to fix a win98 box. the NIC is working fine, getting IP (using DHCP, and all the default setting for other network settings) from cable router fine. but I cant get online, getting the Page Cannot be displayed message. I updated the NIC driver, removed/reinstalled tcp/ip, but no luck. a different win98 box connected to the same router is getting to the internet with no problem. I really dont want to reinstall windows.

any ideas??

thanks in advance

Hmmm, sounds like you probably want to reinstall windows :)

Has this machine ever successfully connected to the internet? Do you have a modem you can try it with? I might start by repairing MSIE, because that is a relatively simple and painless thing to do (go to control panel, add/remove programs, select msie, choose the repair option.)

You're sure you don't have a fixed (and incorrect) gateway specified, right?

rw120555,

thanks for your help!

But i solved the problem, I think my friend(his PC) had installed a new.net software (probably got it from Kazaa or some other apps), which messed up the DNS. I exported the following registry key from the good win98 box and imported into the problematic one:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

problem is solved!

Glad you got it solved. My son keeps putting all these crazy programs on his computer and he gets these weird error messages that I can't get rid of. But somehow, it keeps running. He may be stuck with that machine for life, because I have no idea how I would port all his stuff over to a new machine.
