Two things I need help on: tips on how to get the clip in place and 2nd, should I buy thermal paste and if so, what kind? (three things I guess :)

I'm trying to install a new Athlon XP 3000 in my Abit NF7-M and for the life of me, I can't get the retention clip down and in place. As I press downward, the clip in going "inward" a bit so that I can't get it over the plastic lip and catch into place. Any tips for how to get around this?

The last time I installed a processor was on an MSI K7N420 Pro and it was an Athlon XP 1700. I remember it being tough to push down and pull the clip outward to catch, but nothing like the 3000 which has a green tab and 3 brackets that are to catch. After several attempts to push it down, the thermal paste square on the heatsink is showing wear and I'm worried about installing it at all now.

Any help appreciated.

You should be able to get a flathead screwdriver to press down on the clip to install the HS. the new clips are made so you can use a screwdriver without slipping out of the groove and toasting your board. That's all I can think of, that's how I install every SocketA CPU.

Got it finally, used a different screwdriver that was thin and gave me a better angle.
Thanks for the help.

2 tips (more for any one else who might find this thread on a search):

Put a credit card or something down so if there is a little slippity-doo, you'll be okay.

And use a nutdriver instead of a screwdriver, not as pointy (and thusly dangerous to your motherboard). It should just fit right over the clip part.
