My friend gutted an old Dell Dimension (microATX size) case, and is bent on building the most el-cheapo PC ever. But he's hit a snag - the power switch/led cable to the motherboard doesn't reach. Is there any safe way to extend this? Are there extension cables or kits that could help us out, alternate power switches? Could we just use the PSU power switch instead, even though it's inconvenient? Have I asked enough questions yet? ;]

you can buy a power button/led kit at any real computer store...i.e. microcenter. Yes, you could also just use the psu power switch.

is this an atx type switch like the kind with two wires and a little black plastic jumper looking thing on the end? (as opposed to something older like AT stuff, but i don't know how you would be working with that stuff anymore)

If it's just the two wires you need to reach to the motherboard, you could just cut the wire in the middle and strip it and then add any insulated wire to make it longer and then put some tape over where you twisted the wires together. The power switch just needs to short out the connection on the motherboard to turn the computer on, you can even do it with a screwdriver if you need to so don't worry about ghetto rigging it it to much. Same goes for the led, just find some thin wires and splice them in there.

Here's a picture of the kind of buttons I'm talking about. I'm assuming it's this kind of deal. If it's not, I'm not sure how you can do it, but if this is basically what it is, then splicing in some more wire will work fine.

Something like this
