Help, power surge -> system dead

There was a power surge and my computer died. When I turned it on again, the computer doesn't boot and I smell burning from the general area of the power suppy. I replaced my PSU but still, the system does not boot and I still smell burning (seems to be coming from around the CPU area). How can I determine whether it's my CPU or the motherboard or both that are fried? If the CPU is fried, will the system still boot or at least show me something on the screen? Being broke, I'm looking to get my system back up by replacing the least amount of components. Thanks.

I would guess that your mobo took the brunt of your powersupplies death throes. It probably cooked the voltage regulators or the caps for the voltage regulators. But its hard to say short of testing everything what is dead in your system. I would take everything and examine it with a magnifying glass really carefully. You should be able to see burn marks on components that fried. As far as drives and other peripheral's go, (USB devices, etc.) those are a test later after the system is running kind of thing.

Had a friend's house get hit by lightning and the only thing that went (besides the powersupply) was the mobo, but I think thats a matter of luck.

Was wondering if your system was plugged into a surge suppressor? If so, your system might be covered by the suppressor's warranty. You should check. If it wasn't plugged into a surge suppressor, shame on you...
