HELP!! Poor wireless performance

Is it normal for wireless to be sooooo slow?? It takes 34 sec to transfer A 25.4mb file on my 10base T wired connection, but over 11.5 minutes to transfer the same file using wireless. I'm using A Linksys WAP11 and WPC11 pc card, have 128bit encryption enabled. Any ideas why this is so slow. 🙁
Anyone else having the same transfer rates??

The AP and pc card are approx. 10 ft across and 8 ft down. I have a split level house and the AP is in the closet under the stairs in the center of the house, I have between 65-75% link qaulity and 60-70% signal strength. The current transfer rate shows 11mbs, but have never seen this lower than 11mbs, does this change as the connection gets worse or stay the same??

I recommend using a better client adapter. I'm not sure this will significantly help you out, but I know the ORiNOCO cards are by far the best you can buy and should definitely increase your speed. Also, search the forums for the increased power tweak for the WAP11 which will help your coverage. I use an SMC Barricade router and ORiNOCO wireless adapters in my LAN. The farthest computer is about 40ft away through a floor, a wall and a cabinet and it is locked into the 5.5Mbps zone with an "Excellent" signal... I get awesome speeds from it.. very nice. My other computers are closer; the closest is about 15ft away and it goes through 2 walls and a cabinet and is locked in at 11Mbps with an "Excellent" signal is _VERY_ fast!

So, fool with placement, tweak the router with the increased power hack and if all else fails, I highly recommend the ORiNOCO adapters as will 99% of everyone in here.

Good luck,

Well first you need a better router and/or card. Also you are getting hit twice in speed one being that you are using wireless and two you are using 128 bit encryption. The speeds you should be getthing is about 3-4 mbps. 802.11b is slow, if you want faster you should go to 802.11a which is much faster. Good luck in your adventures with wireless.
