hi,

im assembling my comp, installed almost all the essentials to installing an OS... but I can't get my win2k advanced server CD to boot.

yes, I changed the settings in the bios to let the CDROM boot first, but no luck.

I've booted from a regular win98 boot disk and go into the win2k CD to run setup but it says it can't run it in DOS.

I've made the 4-disk win2k boot up disk from the CD, but when I try to boot from it, it shows me

Disk I/O error

Anyone have thes kinds of problems before?

thanks

Does BIOS even recognize your CD drive. I have a feeling that it is not properly connected or some jumpers are improperly set. Have the BIOS auto-detect IDE drives.

yep... when i boot with a regular win95/98 boot disk, i can go to F: (cdrom) and get a directory listing...

thanks for any help 🙂

You can't run setup from DOS, the DOS installer for w2k is called winnt.exe and is inside the i386 directory. Also, I believe if you run winnt.exe /b (might be another switch) that you will not need the 4 boot disks.

i tried that but it still didn't run the setup...

i installed a Philips 8x4x32 CDRW drive...
even when I put in a win95 installation CD and try to run setup, it gives me the

Something something
Abort? Retry? Fail?

error message...

i think the cdrw i got is bad or something, i disconnected the CDRW and got an old Creative CD-Rom 4x drive... i could run the winnt.exe from the i386 dir (but it still didn't boot off the cd) and also could run setup.exe from an old win95 cd...

i might have to RMA this arg
