I have an Epson 640 Printer and it's driving me crazy. Usually if one of the ink cartridges runs out of ink, the light flashes on the printer display next to a symbol of an ink drop. When it flashes, usually you hold down the "cleaning head" button and the ink cartridge slots come out and you can open them up and replace them.

Well, I'm out of black ink, yet the light doesn't flash when it's suppose to be out of ink. As a result, this prevents the slot to come out to the side after hitting the ink cleaning button. Anyone have any suggestions on how to replace the ink cartridge? I was wondering if any body has gone through the same experience? Thx

<U>"I believe every Epson has an easy way to change the ink cartridge before its
empty. On the 640 you hold down the form feed button for 3 seconds and the
print heads move over to allow the cartridges to be changed. Its in the
manual under "Replacing an outdated ink cartridge"." --</U> from a newsgroup posting

Make sure you wait about 10 seconds after you do that to be sure the printer doesn't decide to start moving the printhead on you. My 850 did the same as yours, and as a last resort I had to force the thing into place with the printer off to change the ink

I ran into the same problem on a 600 cartrige empty and no flashing light so it just goes to head cleaning. So I would start head cleaning and pull the plug when the cartrige is acccesable. I refill the cartriges before they are empty.:)

Later I installed a click switch in the power cord to make procedure less complicated(found the one I used at Wal-Mart.:D

My 600 was nothing but problems. Since ink was about $50 I just looked for a hot deal and got a new Epson C60 for $55. Even though it's a cheap printer it works much better than my old Stylus 600.
