I just bought an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor with an Asus A7V266-E mobo and the MSI Geforce4 mx440 video card and i am getting all sorts of errors. At first when i tried to install it all under win98se i got registry errors and i couldnt get anything to work. I tried winXP and managed to install it all but i cant run any games at all, i crash after about a minute of playing, sometimes i dont even get into the game. I thought it was the video card at first because i read that other people are having problems aswell, so I installed my old Ge2 mx400 video card and im getting the exact same problems. I crash after about a minute of game time and most of the time i cant even load the game. I get random reboots after loading windows. Please help me. I dont know what to do anymore. This is the first time i bought an AMD chip and i am not very happy at this point. Ive had 4 other Asus motherboards and never any problems with them, so i went Asus this time aswell. Thank you in advance.

Relax is the first tip! Next try changing you memory stick, moving the slot its in. Then take out all unecessary card and see how that effects it. Make sure you have the latest drivers as i know that with 2k based o/s and via chipsets games hang without recent drivers. After that scan you hard drive see if you have any bad sectors. this can cause wired messages. it does sound like your memory to me though so try that first.

Hmmm. I've had no problems with AMD chips that weren't self-inflicted.

I second Littlehomer, but:

Have you installed AsusProbe? What are the mobo/cpu temps?

could we get a complete description of your computer, including how many watt psu you have? also did you do a format and then a clean install of the os before installing the new mobo and cpu?

Ok Asus Probe info:

CPU Temp : 67 C
MB Temp : 32 C
CPU Fan : 4560
V core: 1.824

The PSU is 300W

I tried installing some beta drivers for the card but nothing seems to work. My GF4mx440 AND my GF2mx400 cards both crash when i try to run any games. I also put the memory into the second bank slot and that didnt help. I disabled sound, didnt help either.

It was a fresh install on a brand new HD. I used the bootable XP cd. I got version 4.37 4 in 1 VIA chipset drivers.

Temps look OK to me. Run a memory tester? And try installing 'out of the box' i.e. use the 4 in 1's included with the board.

Ok i managed to get my computer working in win98se. It seems that the video card needs some miniVDD driver to run aswell as the Nvidia driver. The VIA chipset 4in1 drivers overwrite the minivdd driver and everything screws up. Any ideas on how i can still run winXP and this video card? WinXp comes with a version of the 4in1 drivers already and automatically overwrites the drivers i need to be able to use my video card in games. I am 99.9% sure Via 4in1 drivers and the MSI/Nvidia drivers for the GF4mx440 are the source of the problem, and the only way i can get things going is under win98.
