I will be building a new PC and getting a GEO 3, but until that happens I'd like to put a good card in my current system and want to stay around the $200 range.

I'm looking at the Visiontek Nvidia GeForce2GTS 64MB DDR Video Card
AGP4X 2D/3D for $235.

Is that a good choice? Any other suggestions?

Also; newbie question. Am I correct that I can put a 4agp card in a 2agp slot?

Thank you in advance for your help.

thats way too much, almost the price of the ultra. you should wait till newegg has some more of their $143 msi GF 2 pros, which will probably be in a week or two, and get that, also the 4x will work fine in the 2x

Are you guys saying MSI Pro because it's a superior card to the one I picked, or because it's a more cost effective choice?

Forget price for a moment. Which of the two cards is better?

ps: I just found the Visiontek Nvidia GeForce2GTS for $190 at MultiWave.

Thanks

I would take the VisionTek GTS if I was given my chioce, but we are talking about <10 fps difference for 50 bucks. AND you would have a strong CPU to see the difference.

Yes you can run a 4x in a 2x agp slot.

Hey Terrapin, are you the same Terrapin from the old Gaming-Age boards? Did you ever get that PS2? ;)

much better card. The GTS PRO cards are better because they make headway in solving the memory bandwith problems of the normal GTS cards. The cores are the same, just handpicked to run at higher speeds, and the memory modules on the pro cards are much faster. Read the Geforce2 Pro review at anandtech. 235 for a GTS card is ridiculous. I am assuming that the card you picked isn't GF2 GTS Pro.

Get the MSI Pro. Cheaper and faster than the Visiontek GTS card you want.

Is MSI a manufacturer?

I found a Leadtek Geoforce 2 Pro 32MB for $160, and the 64MB version for $215.

Is that what I want over the one I originally mentioned?

If you're gonna end up upgrading to a new system you don't need to focus on fps, I'd say go with the Radeon 64mb DDR. It's cheaper than the GTSpro, u get better features on the card, and u get much better visual display.

IMHO, they way I am seeing video cards is that FPS are starting to get high enough that QUALITY is much more a weightier factor, the human eye isn't going to detect thos 3 extra fps (unless your using a 2mb video card or something hehe :)) so visual display is more important. From what I HEARD, ATI Radeon 64MB outdoes all but the GeForce 3's in visual quality, and it loses to GeForce 3 is the next generation, Radeon 2 is supposed to come out this summer and from what I hear, It has seriously high potential to give the 1,2 to nVidia.

Just a random thought that was floating by and had the nerve to smack me across the face and spitting it out to those who care. (or don't care) :D

D7.55-010523B-546E - 4.13.7115
Posted May 31, 2001 ??

www.rage3d.com just released some new beta drivers, 4.13.7140 i believe, and so far from what i hear they've had positive feedback

take not, these are then the OFFICIAL drivers that are supported by ATi but simply beta's, however, people at www.rage3d.com can be just as good support, it's up to you, some people like to stick with the officials while others like to go with the newest betas, whichever works for your system, if 1 set fails, uninstall and try another, some have had success with older ones while others with the new, hope that helps

And at the end of the day I bought the ATI Radeon 64mb card and it rocks.

I had the Canapus Spectra tnt1 16mgs before which was actually very good considering its age. This cards 3D is unreal. Much brighter card too which is something I'll have to get used to.

With the drivers it came with, and the newest beta drivers, I get the same error message when I boot up tho. "ATI Launchpad: AtiSserv failed to provide requrired interfaces!"

Odd message considering everything seems to be working fine. *shrug*

Thanks guys for the advice. I love the card!!!!
