**EDIT*** Ok, so when trying to get the xp90 on...it rocked and I wound up having to lift it off. Should I clean both or leave the heatsink on and not worry about it?

Yes I did. Could get oil from your hands on either while handling them. I just used the highest % isopropyl alcohol I could find. Like .99 cents at Eckerds I think.

Yeah alcohol is the recommended cleaner I think... just use it sparingly and only on the surfaces where the artic silver will be applied.

Think I should place the processor in the computer before I clean it to avoid any chance of bending pins while cleaning it?

It all depends on how careful you are. Personally, I take them out.

i got some Akasa TIM clean.....its got petroleum distillates in it, and it leaves things smelling LEMONY fresh. citrus based solvent mmmmm.

works quiet well, makes removing crusty thermal pads easy as...then it just evapourates

if you rocked the heatsink while installing it I would remove it and start over, should take like 15 minutes and its worth it to know that its on right.

I put mine on the little rubber pad thing that it was shipped on while I hold it for cleaning.
As for your situation, I don't think it will matter. I did this and went thru the whole re-cleaning and there was no difference in temps.

The Arctic Silver people make a product called ArctiClean for cleaning heatsinks and heatspreaders. If you can wait for that to ship, I would advise that. Otherwise 99% isoprpyl alcohol will do fine.
