For some reason with my NIC I can only have a node type of peer-peer. So I can only see computers that are on the campus network, but cant connect to any internet sites. I'm using the same jack with my roomies computer and it is fine. I'm just wondering if there is a way to change the node type or anything, or if this is something that has to be done by our campus network guy.

Sounds like a DNS issue. Check your roommate's system, in network properties, and see if he has primary and seconday DNS servers entered. If he does, and you don't, that's the problem.

I was seeing one more DNS server than he was, even though we both didnt have any entered in. I changed my setting so I'd only see the two that he does, but it didnt help. The only places we differ now are the default gateway, subnet mask and ip address. My ip address isnt something I can really change since it is auto assigned, so that means I cant change the subnet mask either. The problem is with the ip address the help site doesnt even list it as one that is valid for the campus network.
