hey all, i recently installed windows 7 64 bit and i can't seem to get any games to display properly on an asus vw246 monitor.

when they start, they are surrounded by a black border. i've tried re-installing drivers, running in compatability mode (vista and xp's) but no change.

i ran all these games fine on vista 64 bit, same hardware last week.

any suggestions? thanks :)

Sounds like you're playing games at something other than the monitor's native resolution (1920x1080).

i thought that too but it doesn't matter what resolution i use, the border doesn't change.

Gonna sound crazy but did you change the game resolution to match the desk top res?

Does the game support wide screeen?
What is it?

ok, i made some progress. in compatibility mode i unchecked compatibilities to various OS's and checked

-disable visual themes
-disable desktop composition
-disable display scaling on high dpi setttings.

this allowed me to see and change the video settings in game to match my desktop.

the game working now are civ5, achtung:kharkov and real war 1242

the game still messed up some is madden 08 but it seems ok other than not being able to see the cursor in the setup screens.

so is this the way windows 7 works? i'll need to do this for the games i haven't installed yet, like black ops and other newer games?

not a big deal but i'm surprised that vista was more compatible than win7. or i'm doing something wrong.

Perhaps try installing the driver for the monitor. If your games worked fine in Vista with the same hardware they will also work fine in Win 7. In my experience Win 7 can do everything Vista could with less overhead. Win 7 is basically just a cleaned up, refined Vista and not a radically different OS like Win XP to Vista.

yeah, thats my problem i think. i looked for a driver last night but didn't see one on asus site. i'm going to check the box in the attic today for a disc.

it doesn't appear the nv control panel is recognizing my monitor correctly. everest reads it but nv lists it as an "ancor communication" not an asus monitor. googling ancor brought up some issues with nv and then checking my control panel i see that the native resolution is listed under "HD, SD" and not under PC modes. is that the problem you think?

i'm going to read some more once my coffee sinks in...

edit- tried hooking it up via hdmi to see if it would read but no luck yet.

update-

i switched to hdmi but it still shows as "ancor communications. i had read that nv control panel would read the monito pproperly over hdmi but no.

anyway, more importantly, i tried a couple different drivers (currently on 260.89) and now most games are working fine. all but madden 08 so far. madden looks ok, just no cursor still. reinstalled but no luck. odd.

thanks for all your help!
