Long Story, Got home from work few days ago, 7pm thought I'd check my email...found PC on...but not responding. I reboot....loads windows...then locks up solid. I rebooted and repeated this process many times. Queried the Kid's (they had been on last, wife before that) and they had no problems....I assumed at that point (mistake I think..) that is was software related...tried to run Sysbot (ok), Adaware (locked), Norton AV (locked).....so now I'm thinking windows is hosed (I try to repair but even in PF8 mode it was locking up. I start trying to reload Windows (praying it will keep all my old stuff!!!!) and it keeps locking up still! Obviously at this point, I'm in Panic Mode. Go to bed and think about it...and come to the conclusion it's most likely Memory or some other hardware. I relax the memory timings, and keep it running to finally complete the XP install. Even run IE a couple minutes before it locks up again!! I spent yesterday getting it out of it's cabinet and on the Desk top so I can start debugging the hardware.

The problem is when I reloaded Windows, it saved everyones Data, except I can not access mine! Originally my stuff was in "JET Documents" or something like that. I can see that folder still there. The reload has created a "JET.JETPC Documents" for me for some reason. As usual I am the admin, wife and kids have limited access.

Anytime I try to access my old "JET" folder...I get an error saying I have no permission!!! How can I fix that? I have hundreds of MB's of Mail, Data, pictures, downloads, etc. I need to get to this obviously. Reg tweak? Anything? Any help much appreciated.

Really bummed over the whole deal, wasn't looking to be digging into the system until I do my planned upgrade soon, but I need that data, and of course fix the problem, and get my programs re-loaded.

Bummed in SoCal.....and lucky to have decent work PC!

Thanks!

Try right clicking the folder in explorer>Properties>Security>Advanced>Owner. Select your current username as the owner, and don't forget to check off "replace owner on subcontainers and objects." You should be able to access everything in that folder now.

I'll give that a try! Report back tomorrow! Found it interesting the Admin could not access all folders..must be cause it was from a different admin as far as the OS is concerned?

Thanks!

The EXACT same problem here, been just ignoring it for months as I had another copy of my important stuff that is locked in those folders.

I don't have networking installed so there's no advanced security to play with really, any other idea's?

It is kinda anoying, and sad at the same time, a filesystem should not allow this to happen.

Ok....I have no Security Tab when I check properties from Explorer. I know I've had that tab before...how can I add it?

To get the Security tab, you need to turn off simple file sharing (which is a good idea to begin with):
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended].

You should always turn off file and printer sharing, is a back door for hackers ;).
It is the ownership that is preventing you from accessing the folder and it's contents. If you taqke ownership, the contents are yours :D

I've always turned off File and Print sharing in Network properties..was not aware of issues with "simple file sharing"

I do run behind a router....and my boys PC have a 802.11b+ link to the router. Since I just "reloaded" XP...I have a ton of work to do. I hate that to no end...you get it the way you like it, and get used to it....and bam! PC's..love'm and hate'm!

Thanks for info gents! I'll be giving it a go this afternoon. That and debugging my memory modules...
