I'm on a permanent internet connection (ethernet) via college, and I wanted to install a router to host a website. I have a seperate machine to do the hosting apart from my usual rig that I use. Is it possible to install this and setup the seperate machine as a server for the website with a different IP address and not affect my usual computer? Can I host more than one website on this computer? Also, which router would be recommended for this job? The SMC barricade, linksys, or netgear? I wanted to know this as soon as possible since there are many hot deals going on for these right now in the Hot Deals Forum. Any help would be appreciated it. Thanks! :)

Before you start, are you sure your college will let you host a website on ethernet? Most schools don't allow servers on their networks either by blocking ports (port 80 for web) or by monitoring traffic.

Otherwise, you need a router which can forward ports to your server computer. I have and use the linksys and like it very much. But the netgear and smc will also work great. You can host more than one website if you're using linux with apache, and the server editions of nt 4.0 and w2k. The other versions of windows only allow 1 website, or more specifically, one domain name.

Hmm...I don't know what my school allows. But either way, I want to learn how to do this since next year I'll probably be in the apartments on DSL. :) It'll be good to know now. ;)

blstriker, I didn't know that about windows. I guess I'll have to go locate a server edition of NT or Win2k. Thanks for the input.

Anyone else have any helpful info? Thanks! :)
