Help Please!!! New motherboard wont run past 10 sec.

Just upgraded my system to a new MSI K8N Neo Platinum MB , with an AMD 64 3400+ and Crucial Ballistix 3200 (1Gig) the problem I have is that at start-up the thing will only run for exactily 10 seconds and then shut down. Durring this time I never see any video to my monitor (like any posting info) screen remains blank. I then tried unplugging all the items from the mother board and tried booting it by itself (still suts off after 10 seconds) even with all the ram out of it it acts the same. All installation of the AMD processor went great everything just went right in place . I think im down to either the motherboard or the CPU (retail) is defective (leaning toward the motherboard) unless any of you have some other thoughts. This is the first AMD 64 that ive installed and i was wondering if i need to do anything special to prep the factory heatsink/fan to reinstall ? if I decide to remove it and take another look at the processor. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Are all of the fans spinning. It sort of sounds like an overheating situation. Is the heatsink installed properly, with the heatsink fan plugged into the proper connection on the motherboard. If you happen to plug this fan into another of the fan connections on the motherboard, the mb will not detect the fan, and will shut itself down.

Yes all fans are running....I just checked the CPU fan is plugged in to the correct plug.....I too was wondering about an overheat situation but since i cant see anything on the screen I have no way of knowing. the Retail AMD fan and heat sinking material all looked great and seemed to install just fine. It may be time to remove it and take another look though. Thanks

If you can't see anything on the screen at all, make sure your videocard is properly seated. It might not be snapped in all the way. Second thing is make sure you put the heatsink on the right way. It is possible to put it on backwards.

Checked video card its seated ok....I did remove the Heatsink/Fan and all looked ok with the fit and the heatsinking material. It looks like on the MSI board I have that you can put it on one of two ways (It has catches on both sides ) I re-applied some Antec compound and reinstalled it . Still shuts down at the 10 second mark. Gwai lo I was going to try another power supply but the one I have doesnt have the square 12v plug for this MB .. may have to try to get one to try.

Make sure you get a name brand high quality power supply and not just some mega 500w super duper one that is a generic piece of crap. I suggest Antec or Enermax.

but the one I have doesnt have the square 12v plug for this MB .. may have to try to get one to try.
If you don't have the square 12V plug, there's your problem right there. See amdskip's advice above 🙂

The one im using is an Antec 350W thats in my Antec case (It has the square 12v plug) its the other 400W ATX PSU that I have laying around that doesnt have the plug. The Antec 350W has been running my 1800XP great up to now I havent had any powersupply issues. could it be its not enough? I think the documentation with the chip said use at least 300W.

What video card is it, and what's the rest of the system's spec as far as drives and cards? Trying to get a feel for how heavily loaded this system is... 🙂

edit: oh, and if you have the case's front USB ports plugged into the MSI's headers, unplug them.

Vid card is a Chaintech Nvidia 5900XT ...one Lite-on DVD burner ...two Maxtor hard drives 120MB total...onboard audio & network Thats about it . I do not have the front USB ports plugged in .

Thanks

You got the auxiliary power feed plugged into the 5900XT, right? If you already do, then maybe try a mellow old GeForce2 or something to see if it's a power-drain issue.

have you gone through the motherboard, and set all your motherboard jumpers?

check to make sure the CMOS reset is in the default position and not the clear position.

also, is the motherboard installed in the case? if so, take it out and lay it on a wooden desk, cardboard box, plywood, and run it off that.
