help Please: networking setup

do you have to have a hub inorder to share internet connection? My network connection only shows one computer this one. I am trying to networking two computers, one running Ms ME & the other Ms 95

and please don't say I should of ask my question in the network section!

You should have posted it in the Network section, that's where it belongs.

What kind of cables do you use? The "telephone" like ones or "cable tv" like ones?

In order to share internet over 2 computers using an external modem (ethernet DSL or cable or some such) you need the modem connected to router, router to hub, then hub to the two computers. You can combine some of these components, like I know several companies sell router/hubs. Alternate method would be using Windows internal internet sharing software (NAT) which I believe is built into ME. This takes place of the DHCP abuility of the router. Not sure exact set up, but me thinks you need a hub for that also. If you have an internal modem or something on one computer, maybe possible to hookup ethernet patch between two computers, then use either Windows NAT software or some other internet sharing software. Prolly best, for future of adding other computers would be to buy router/hub and work from there.

How would you share a dial-up connection with an external modem, using only two NICs and an ethernet cable? Is it even possible with only that equipment? Assume one computer has Win98SE, the other has Win2000.

If all's you have is the two computers connected with a cable, you need a crossover cable. If you plan on adding more computers or ethernet devices you'll need a hub or switch. When you use a hub or switch you use standard straight thru cables.

Yes ICS will work with a dialup connection and two systems tied together.

It's possible but if you need to ask this question I wouldn't try :\

You need a crossover cable, you can make it yourself or you might find it for sale ...

So would sharing an external dial-up modem be considered an ethernet device, requiring a hub/router? Or could I just use the crossover cable you suggested and somehow enable Internet sharing for the dial-up connection?

if you need to ask this question I wouldn't try :\

Why is that? Isn't the only hardware setup required a crossover cable to connect the two NICs, and the rest of the setup is software based? At least that's how I envision it.

You wouldn't need a hub.

You could use Windows 98SE's built in Internet sharing, hook the 2 computers together w/ the crossover cable, set up TCP/IP, set the gateway on the other computer to the IP of the one sharing.

You can either do a software sharing solution or a hardware based one (such as a DSL router with modem port). If you do software, the one sharing has to be on for the other to work.

You would run ICS on the system with the modem on it. It generates a floppy and tells you what to do with it. It modifies the network settings making the system with the modem, the gateway to the internet.
