Hello everyone,

I am currently in the market for a DVD drive and have narrowed the field down to either an ASUS 12x or Toshiba 12X drive. I have read a great number of reviews about Toshiba units but have found very little about the ASUS drives. I understand they have some interesting features (variable speed selection) and are built very well. From another site that benchmarks DVD drives they mention that the ASUS is the first DVD drive that is able to read to a CD burner @ 12x for on-the-fly recording. I am going to simply watch DVD's and Rip some to VCD. Both are supposed to be region free with either a firmware upgrade (toshiba) or jumper-setting (asus). Does anyone have any experience with the ASUS drive as compared to the Toshiba units? Any recommendations for my situation? I certainly appreciate anyone's input. Thanks in advance!

The ASUS drive is very nice....reliable, fast, runs well. I can't say anything about the Toshiba drive though...

Thank you for your reply. The Asus really sounds like a good drive indeed. I know that the Toshiba's are very popular, but I really like the products that Asus puts out. Thanks again!

Both are great drives. I bought the Toshiba. Very quiet unlike the Pioneer in one of my other comps. CloneCd compatible as well. If region free is a big issue, I'd lean toward the ASUS. I'm sure you'll be happy with either.

Just better watch out for the later released Toshiba drives. No none hack firmware yet for regionfree. Check out the list below and read up on it

Hey thanks everyone for the replies. I really like what I have learned about the toshiba drives, but I am able to get a region free asus for real cheap (8x though...not too bad). I am going to think a little more and then make a decision. Thanks again for all the suggestions!
