Hi there,

I bought a CPU from a member on these forums, and it arrived yesterday... today, when I started to put together my SFF, I noticed there was a blemish on the shiny core surface, and something that looks like a chipped corner :(

I've uploaded pics, please give me your opinion... I don't know what to do...

CPU 1
CPU 2
CPU 3
CPU 4

Could you take any worse pictures?

Yes, it probably is chipped. Does it matter? Most likely not, not for that chip anyways.

I have used processors with much uglier chips and there have not been any problems. As a matter of fact, if you want to get anal about it, I am sure that technically every core is chipped in one way or another.

It may be a very tiny chip on the corner but I have seen them worse and they work absolutely fine...I chipped a corner on my NB chipset on an old i845 mobo and it stopped working when I oc'd a great deal...Ran fine at stock...Sold it to a guy as damaged and he has ran it there for quite some time now.....

By the way my crack was more then a angle chip it cracked down more closer to the circuit board....

My gut says you likely are fine, but it is your call if you want to accept a damaged chip...Could be harder to sell it later down the road......

Sorry about the picture quality, my camera won't focus very well at this distance, although I believe the first two pics are the easiest to read.

So, you guys think it's OK to install the CPU and apply the heatsink and fan?

I'm worried abou this, because it's been two years since I've wanted to get myself a SFF, and now I can finally put it together - as a gift for myself, for my birthday - and I don't want anything to go wrong with it. I'm not trying to be anal - obviously, I don't have much experience in these matters.

If the trader didn't state there was damage or "as is" or provide pics that clearly showed the damage when selling, I would contact them and give them the alternatives of either-

1. Issue a refund. It is a small item so I'd eat the return shipping just because I am cool like that :p

2. Tell them I can test it, and if it tests good I'll keep it but want a partial refund because the resell value is indeed lower operational or not.

Regardless I'd give them a neutral eval if they co-operate fully, negative if they don't. Traders have to be made accountable for shady practices if that is the case. If they didn't even notice the damage then the neutral is a good way to make them more detail oriented in respect to what they sell and the stated condition.

BTW, if it is even a half assed digicam there should be a macro mode that is for close ups like these :)

I've found that a scanner does REALLY good pics of CPUs. See the "Karaktu mobile Celeron" thread for a good pic of the pin side of a socket 478 chip. Speaking of mobile Celerons, the CPU in the pic looks like one. Don't know about the center part but the corner is chipped a bit. Doesn't look too bad. Most CPUs will suffer the same fate after it has gone through a few installs. My take is that as long as it works, shouldn't suffer any ill effects.

Looking at my CPU...it doe look to be not as smooth..even a bit rougher in the edges than yours when I got it.

But as long as it works and it runs fine...it's no big deal IMO.
