If the controller cannot see the hard drive, period, then it isn't going to matter which controller, what mode it's in, or what drivers he's using.

It's like if I fired up my SCSI rig and the SCSI card did not detect a SCSI drive (disconnected cable or faulty cable or dead drive or whatever). I can press F6, use the right drivers, etc, but if the drive wasn't detected by the card, it's not going to help.

rsd, if the Promise is in IDE mode then no question about it, you should see the drive listed by the controller. And if the drive is showing up, then the Promise in IDE mode is your simplest route, from what I've seen of people battling to make an SATA drive the boot drive on this family of boards. My editorial comment would be "why bother with SATA in the first place," but it's too late now I guess. :p
I'm going to be lazy and not bother checking, but I thoght RSD said that his bios was seeing the via controller? Wouldn't that be a + for getting his HD recognized? I'm still not sure he had the right drivers becuase he never saw an option for installing a scsi device when using the floppy

Copied the contents of the zip over,

I can still only select Via Raid Controller or Via ATA/ATAPI Host Controller.

The HD is not being detected at all.

sigh, thanks for all the suggestion I do appreciate it. Wish I could find an instance of this working with the same HD.

Hmm something must be wrong with the drive. I'm using a K8V Deluxe also with a Raptor on the via controller. Does the drive show up in the bios at all? Where the optical drives are also listed?

No does not show up at all, no matter whether it was connected to the Via or Promise controller. I'll know for sure in a day or two hopefully when the replacement gets here.

Hey Chesscat, yeah I saw that post before I posted here.

Actually I did have the same issue with the FD cable being backwards, but I fixed that before I posted. I can read/write from the Floppy fine now.

I have tried to Press Tab for the Via Controller utility menu, and I get into it, but it shows no devices being detected and I can't do anything except exit it.

I found this post on another forum, that describes an issue with Maxtor SATA drives in general. I'm just hoping this isn't my situation and it is just a bum drive.

This guy (kaijufan) has maxtor sata drive like you and same mobo.

Thanks for the link chesscat. Seems like his problems were mainly not using the right drivers for the right controller and Windows XP not recognizing it. However the controllers themselves don't detect a HD connected during boot is my problem.

But it is good to see that Maxtor SATA HD should in theory work. I'll definitely post when I get my replacement and test that out. I pray that it is just a bad HD heh.

Well got the replacement HD and still not detected. I'm going to try to flash back to the original bios--never tried it with that bios. Otherwise need to try to RMA I guess the board. this sucks :(
