On my other computer, the last time I started up I got a weird message that said "Not today!" Then my email and browser stopped working, I got some kind of an error message about drivers, and now computer will not boot. I can hear it starting up ok, but the screen is black, can't even see BIOS or other startup stuff.

I have anti-virus software loaded, but it was not running in background and I never made the rescue disks :-(

I'm thinking about flashing the bios, then installing a different hard drive as the boot drive, and the presumably infected drive as a secondary drive, then running anti-virus software.

Am I on the right track? Might I have to get a new motherboard and/or hard drive? I would REALLY appreciate any help.

Ouch, sounds like a virus for sure. Without any boot discs you a4re really limited in your options. Have you tried hitting the insert key on start-up,or resetting ther cmos via jumpers. That will not likely solve the problem. You will likely have to format and re-install your operating system sadly enough. Remember to make a back-up this time if you end up re-formatting.

Thank you for your comments. All I can think of to try is resetting the CMOS with the jumper as you suggested. I can't reformat and reinstall OS yet, because all yet because the screen is dead, I can't see anything during startup.

Did you see something like this?
Quote:
The Kak virus (aka - Wscript.KakWorm, KakWorm, WScript.KakWorm) is a worm that attaches itself to every email sent from the infected system. It is written with JavaScript. If you see this message box text, 'Kagou-Anit-Kro$oft say not today!', then expect the Kak virus.

Guys, my infected system is networked to antoher computer which seems to be ok. Can a virus cross over the network and get that one too?
