I called Dell today to ask for memory prices for my Inspiron 8100. I just have 128mb right now. the guy said it was expandible up to 1gig. i think thats awesome. next came the $$$$$ question. he said 1 gig will cost $800. he suggested that i get the 512mb which will be sufficient enough. he said that will cost $300. i know that if i bobught it on crucial i'd save some money so i asked him to just tell me what kind of memory i'll need and that i can buy it off crucial.com. he said that if i bought it from anywhere else, it would void the 3 year complete care warranty that i have on my laptop. was it just to get me to buy memory from dell or was he right. man i need some crazy ram 128 isn't good enough............help me, what else can i do?, is what the dell dude said true?

sounds like you got a Dell...I don't see that as I believe that Crucial/Micron probably is a memory supplier of Dell's..just goto Crucial.com they have a memory configurator on their site. This like unto that adding aftermarket parts to an automobile bullshizz that the Magnuson-Moss Act coffin-nailed away.<edit> here is Kingston memory's statement on what you just encountered. I>E> get your aftermarket on.

That's utter BS. Go to crucial.com and save some money.

They cannot prove that you had a non-approved stick of memory in your computer. If you ever have to have the computer worked on by Dell or one of their affiliates, just take out the extra RAM.
