Help please... Computer no longer posts..

Ok, I read through a lot of the other non-POSTing computer threads, but I thought I'd give my own thread a try...

I have a fairly old computer (Abit Be6-II with a p3 550) and it randomly stoped working on me. The monitor would just lose the signal, but I could hear the computer still at work...

After rebooting it a few times it suddenly stopped posting. So, I tried removing things and switching out my video card, no luck. The monitor light flashes yellow, the CPU fan spins, the GFX card fan doesn't spin, and none of the lights on my keyboard, mouse, or cd drives light up.

Anyone pretty sure about what the problem is? I'm guessing its gonna be my motherboard... But I want to be sure before I shell out the money to get a new board and chip...

Thanks for any help anyone can give me...

hi,
do you have another monitor to try?
it could be the monitor.
otherwise, if there are no beep error codes from the motherboard, i'd try a pci video card if you can find one just as a test.
do you see anything on the screen? can you watch it post and then it loses the signal? or is it always gone?
good luck

I have a really old 15" monitor I can try, I'll give it a shot... When the problem first started happening, the computer would post fine and I would get into windows fine. But now, it doesn't post at all. Nothing shows up on my monitor at all. I don't hear any beeps from my motherboard either...

Actually, when I pull all the IDE cables, my cd-r and dvd light up and get power, and that doesn't happen when the IDE cables are in. Also, the fan of my GFX card does spin, I just didn't notice it earlier.

Anyone else have any other ideas of how I can test it to see what the problem is?

i'm guessin psu by what was explained...been there..done that =\ happened to a old pc i'd built for myself then sold to my parents.

Could be capacitors on the motherboard.

I had an Abit BH6 long ago and this was the problem when it showed the same symtoms. Had to replace.

Thanks for all the replies... It is much appreciated..

I don't really have any spares to swap in except the monitor and it wasnt that...
So, Id have to basically buy new parts and try it, which is why I posted here to see if anyone had the same exact problem.

My PSU is a 250 watt Antec one that isnt as old as the rest of my computer, but is it likely that that is the culprit? Everything seems to power on ok, I just dont get anything on the monitor.

Where can I get a new mobo battery? I was thinking of just upgrading the board and chip, but if its the PSU then that wouldnt help and Im not in a position to be spending lots of money right now.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I really want to nail the problem and take care of it without having to buy a bunch of new hardware.
