Help Please! Can't get rid of virus

There was some sort of virus that was on my wifes computer. I thought it was just the ad stuff but it seemed much deeper. Since there was not much stuff on the computer, I decided to just reformat and start with a fresh install. I did that and the virus seems to still be there! I bunch of cmd.exes (black boxes) run at startup and then I get some errors and the ads come back. It there something else that I need to dump to get rid of this? Thank!

Maybe it's a worm and there is a different computer on the network that is infecting it. Or maybe your wife visited the same website or whatever that installed the bad software in the first place, simply got reinfected very quickly.

For example a unpatched WinXP system can be expected to last about 20 minutes on the internet (with no firewall) before it becomes infected with some sort of crap. And that's less time then it takes to get updated. A fresh install of XP has little chance...

Otherwise I am not sure of how a virus will survive a reformat. The only way I know of is if it installed itself in the MBR, because normally that doesn't get reformated in a install. Are you sure that you did a complete format, and not just a restore-type install?

if you have a dos boot disk with fdisk on it you can go fdisk /mbr to format the master boot record.
