Help please, can no longer connect to Steam!!

I have suddenly become unable to connect to steam. I have 2 computers in the house that have the same steam account, but have always been able to connect from one or the other without problems.

Suddenly, when I try to log on with my desktop, it goes to the screen that says logging onto steam account, "my account name", but then stalls at this stage and eventually stops trying to log on and gives the error message that the computer cannot connect to the steam account.

My system specs are E4500 at stock, Vista 32 bit, 3gb ram, 9800GT. My desktop and the other computer with steam, a laptop, are both on the same wireless network. The firewall says that Steam has permission to access the computer. I dont know what happened, I used this setup for more than a year with no problems, except that of course you cant be on steam on both computers at the same time.

Can anyone please help?? I am very frustrated with this problem and have been trying to solve it for a couple of days. I have tried uninstalling Steam and downloading and reinstalling the program, but that has no effect.

I've heard you can delete clientregistry.blob and then reconnect and it usually helps connectivity problems.

at the login prompt uncheck the remember password box. I have the same issue as you if I have steam remember my password. It started when they began sending out verification emails each time you logged in from a different computer.

I recently ran into a Steam issue that might help. I got a new C300 SSD recently. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it and booted up. Re-installed Steam and kept getting an error message that said it couldn't connect.

I reset my password thinking I had forgotten it (I usually have Steam remember it). Still no go. Deleted the blob files, did all kinds of research on Google for hours and still couldn't connect. Windows firewall was set up to allow Steam to pass through.

Finally on a whim I hooked my PC up to my cable modem directly. Tried to launch Steam and it gave me the Steam Guard prompt. It e-mailed me a code, I entered it, everything started working. My guess is that the ports that Steam Guard uses to call home must have been blocked by my router. I hooked my PC back up to my router afterwards and haven't had any issues since.

I had the same problem. Uninstalled and reinstalled steam, that fixed it but blew away all my games in the process... I did not see any warning on the uninstall that it would nuke the installs... thanks steam. Good thing I only had three games downloaded...

I found the files and deleted them. However, when I try to log on, Steam updates itself and reinstalls the very same files that I deleted.

This is really p8ssing me off!!!

Try disabling the firewall, and see if what Major Mullet above had happen to him is happening to you. The fire wall might be blocking an incoming "non-response" message to your computer from steam.

Steam also hates being in the DMZ. I don't know why, but I couldn't login after an update when my desktop's IP is in the DMZ.

Thanks for the replies. I got tired of waiting for Steam to reply. Four days without any response except an automated reply that they had recieved the e-mail. So much for the great Steam that cares so much about PC gamers.

Anyway, as I said, I got tired of waiting and just did a clean install of the OS. This seems to have solved the problem so far, but I am still quite unhappy with the lack of response from Steam.

I am planning to use steam only for games on sale now. Any game that I pay full price for, I will buy the DVD or download from another digital distributor.

Did you by any chance have PeerBlock or PeerGuardian installed? The same exact thing happened to me until I figured out that PeerBlock was blocking the Steam IP.

This really annoyed me. Of course, people don't believe me when I tell them this.

What really annoyed me is that they don't even consider it a problem and will not even correct the message (something bout your credentials). Well, they didn't for years. I haven't checked in a while.

This is what I have always done so that my games have tangible value.

Any anti-virus software with software firewall settings and internet access controls (Kaspesky for example) can also screw with steam.

I wonder if these issues are related.

I can log into Steam just fine but:

a) I can't change my password (an error message like "cannot be completed at this time" comes up).
b) I can't buy games (it says the transaction can't be completed - I tried with multiple methods where there is plenty of money and the transaction still won't go through)
c) I can't contact support (it says I need to log in with my account, but then says there is no such user).

Any ideas?

Steam support account is separate from Steam account - so you need to create new Support account and use that to submit your ticket.

I had a similar problem the other day. I have Steam on both my desktop and laptop. The issue is that when Steam added the Steam Guard protection, I hadn't updated my Steam install on my laptop for some time.

I'm guessing that by default the Steam Guard was locked into my desktop, so when I tried to log in from my laptop, it failed, but because the software hadn't updated in a while, it didn't know why it failed (it kept bringing me back to the password prompt but with no error message like you would get when you type in the password incorrectly).

I was successfully able to delete the clientregistry.blob file, run Steam again, and it updated. When I tried to log in that time, I got the error that this computer was steam guard locked and had to enter a code (which was sent to me via e-mail).

The other solution I've seen is to log onto Steam with your other computer, turn off Steam Guard, then log in and update Steam on the other computer. Once you've successfully done so, you can turn Steam Guard back on (from either computer) and you should be fine.

I did try turning off SteamGuard using the laptop which could still connect, but that had no effect. Still dont know what happened, but a restore to original configuration solved the problem so far. However, I am not happy about this because I am still installing the service packs and saved games that I had to remove to do the clean install.

By the way, it has been two more days and I e-mailed Steam a second time and still have received no response. Way to go Steam!!

If you bumped your Steam support ticket, only result is that it put your ticket at the end of line.
