Help please... can I use any mobo plug for case fans?

I'm pretty new to all this...

I currently have no case fans. My mobo (Asus KA-7) has four fan connectors: 1 & 2 for the cpu fan(s) (only #1 is occupied by the twin Athlon fan); #3 for the "chassis fan" and #4 for the "power fan." Are all these connectors the same? Can I use both 3 & 4 for case fans? Or should I just get one 3-pin fan for the #3 chassis connector, and one 4-pin fan for the other side?

Also, is it only the chassis connector that performs monitoring?

I've also posted this in the "Cases & Cooling" forum without luck, so I'm trying here too.

Thanks

All of the three wire fans allow rpm monitoring (assuming that the mobo supports same). If you are going to use 120mm fans or two 80mm fans, you are probably better off using the 4 pin molex connectors and getting the power from the PSU not the mobo. Those fans might drain too much juice and cause problems with the mobo.

Also, they have adaptors to let you use three wire fans with four wire (molex) connectors and vice versa. Only thing is that you lose the rpm monitoring.

Edit: my recommendation is attach a 3 pin fan to the mobo as a chassis fan and get a molex 4-wire 120mm for the front of the case.

Most 3 pin motherboard is rated for 3Watts!!! So if your fan needs more, DONT!

It'll definitly burn out, not in a day or so but 1-2 month..
