Help playing a HDTV ".ts" file

Had this posted over in "Video" but didn't get any action so trying here...

Not sure if this is the correct forum but my problem is I've got a HDTV .ts file that I want to burn to DVD and watch on my DVD player or if I have to play it on my computer. I missed the first episode of Joey and found it in a binaries newsgroup. I've got a file called "joey.s01e01.hdtv-absinth.ts" but I can't figure out what to do with it. I've googled and read FAQ's for the past 2 hours and so far all I've been able to do is convert it to a .mpg file that Media Player doesn't play.

After further reading I wonder if I'm going about this wrong. Is a .ts file only good for playing on a computer? I managed to use a program called "VideoLAN" to play it but it locks up right after the intro and credits so I can't watch the episode.

Any suggestions???

Strange, I'm not sure what that is. It's usually put into Xvid or divx or SVCD format from HD. Is it just one file?

I think he's referring to the video.ts files which stores like the menus (IIRC) or video information...

Now that it's in .mpg form(MPEG2-PS), just use Nero or whatever to make a DVD out of it, and you're set.

Sahrin: Yeah, I did find that VideoLAN program and it worked but only up to the intro/credits. After that the program locks with a Dr. Watson error.

MustISO: Yes, it is one single file. Like I said, I missed the first episode of Joey so I did a binaries search for "joey" on http://alt.binaries.nl and found someone had uploaded it to alt.binaries.hdtv. I downloaded all of the headers and they extract to a single large (~3.5GB) file called "joey.s01e01.hdtv-absinth.ts".

ViRGE: I can't figure out how to burn a .mpg to DVD using Nero. I've got 6.3 Ultra Edition. I did find out I could enable the HD-Burn option but when I tried to drop my .ts file into the VIDEO_TS folder it said something about being over 2GB and not being able to be stored in an ISO format, blah, blah, blah. I'm going to try splitting it into 2 sections and see if I can do it then.

You can use a program called hdtvtompeg2 to convert it to an MPEG2. You should be able to playback these files in PowerDVD (any DVD software should work) or even Windows Media Player if you have the proper MPEG2 codecs.

Since you said you have Nero Ultra, you can use Nero Recode to make the MPEG2 file into a proper DVD that you can record onto a disc.

The .TS file is a transport stream. I have a FusionHDTV tuner card and it records in the same format. It plays back in the FusionHDTV player. The full version is only available if you have the hardware. There is a demo, but it limits playback to 3:30. http://www.dvico.com/hdtv/download.asp

Thanks for the info. I was able to use a proggie called VideoLAN to play it but I had to break it into multiple files and play them as singles. I upgraded my main rig to SP2 and I haven't had any issues other than this file but SP2 is a major overhaul. No one really knows what it broke until the fixes come out.
