what I mean by blue? the blue wire on the cat5...

the blue/white is the wire on the cat5 that is stranded, alternates between blue, and white.

The question is, I'll be using these two for PHONE, 'send/recv' so only one pair of wire within the cat5 is needed...

however the keystone rj12 jack, there are 8 positions... which position does each of the two wires get punched into, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8?

For a normal phone line the middle 2 wires are used for transmission. So positions 4 & 5 in your case. Just make sure you are consistent on your wiring and you should be ok.

Phones are wired in split pairs. So if you have for lines:

Line 1: 4-5
Line 2: 3-6
Line 3: 2-7
Line 4: 1-8

ah.... cool I got it now..

i was told verbally, use blue and white/blue

but didnt know until now that these two ARE the 4th and 5th wires, by standard...

and are installed into the Jack into the same 4th and 5th pin sockets...

on a seperate note, do most people for cat5 at home use 568A or 568B?

Every data guy I've worked with uses "B". That's what I use too when I do my own stuff.

Evadman: The wire pairing you described is "USOC" and not used anymore (for "a long time")

The 568a (or b) is the correct pinout.

Pair 1 = 4&5
Pair 2 = 3&6
Pair 3 = 1&2
Pair 4 = 7&8

The colors will depend on 568a or b.

Pair 1 = blue
Pair 2 = (orange, 568a ..... green 568b)
Pair 3 = (green, 568b ....... orange 568a)
Pair 4 = brown

The connector on the keystone jack should be color coded for each pair. There may also be a legend describing the colors for either 568a or 568b. The white/strip usually goes on the left.

If you were wiring to a standard biscuit block (phone jack) the blue pair would connect to red & green, the (orange or green) pair would connect to black & yellow.

FWIW

Really? That's the way my entire neighberhood (and every house I worked on) is. My neighborhood is about 22 years old though, but one of the new houses I worked on used cat 5 cable for the phones, and used that setup. that house was less than a year old.

I was unaware the standard for phones changed to the data network standard. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I will update the database in my Head :)
