HELP: Pictures are gone - Fixed, now question, why?

Last nite while online pictures at websites just didn't load. why would this happen? I thought a restart would fix it, but no luck, still no pictures.
Now my wall paper background isn't showing up.

does anyone know why this is happening? I went through and freed up 650 mb of hard drive space this morning thinking that I was out of memory, but still no luck.
Any Ideas?

I am running win 98 with ie 5.5 sp1


edit:some how in internet explorer the option to see pictures was disabled, does this happen automatically (I would never do this myself)?
