Help picking out a digital camera please

KaOTiK

Lifer
I'm going to be picking up a digital camera soon and need some help with which one I should get as I don't know much about them.

What I will be using it for is mostly close up pictures. Mainly of textures so I need high res/detailed pics. My budget is around 800 but if I could keep it 400-500 instead that would be great.

Any suggestions of certain type/brand/etc or a good website for trying to figure this out would be greatly appricated, thank you

Anyone? I've been searching websites but a lot of it doesn't really say if they are good for very close up shots and such so far

What kind of experience do you have taking pictures? If you want close-ups with the convenience of P&S, you might get something like the Canon S3IS. They make use of additional lens attachments for macro shots.

If you're looking for something to use in a photography class, you should be able to find DSLR bundles for around $800. The Canon XT/350D is a good camera you could probably get on the cheapish since it's successor, the XTi/400D has been out a while. Your problem here will be finding a macro lens within your budget.

Not much in the way of experience so P&S would probably be better.
I'll be using these textures a lot in photoshop and such for 3D work if that helps any.
Thanks for the response 😀

Get the Nikon D50 with the 18-55mm lens. Goes for about $600ish.

The issue with this solution is the overall useability for the OP. He doesn't seem to be too much an enthusiast, so the macro-ability on the 18-55mm won't be all that good. Also, if he wants to use something like an S2is/S3is (or comparable other brand camera) he gets a long, stabilized range. Using an external macro attachment he can get a decent macro at cheaper, and more overall use out of the camera as far as his intentions are concerned.

Now, if he wants to invest time into learning SLR photography, and start into a lens and flash system, then I think the D50 is a great choice. You can get sick close-up macros with reverse-mount lens adapters.

Nikon Coolpix S4 has an excellent macro. The image quality is so-so with too much compression even in the highest quality mode. I wish Nikon would upgrade the firmware to allow better quality shots. But the macro is great. Going for $250 at Ritz right now.

$800 is not really in DSLR range when you figure in accessories, so you're looking for a P&S, and there's no way in hell I'd spend $800 on a P&S so your $400-500 budget is good. I wouldn't spend more than that.

Canon FTW!
