help picking Intel motherboard

I have no idea where to begin since I have always bought prebuilt comps in the past. Im not 100% sure if I will actually build my own but thats the direction I am leaning.

Im planning on going with a Core 2 Duo cpu and I dont need anything special like SLI or Crossfire and I doubt I will overclock much. I just need a reliable board around $100. I do need a PCI-E 2.0 board of course but thats about all I know. Looking through all the chipsets and functions is giving me headache so even some basic advice would be helpful.

I found this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/...2E16813131348&Tpk=9300 I know its really an htpc type board but it has good reviews and not just from newegg customers.

I kind of like having onboard video in case I am in between cards. pretty much every HP/Compaq pc that I have owned had an ASUS board with onboard nvidia video and I have never had one single problem with them.

May I recommend: getting an inexpensive video card instead of on board graphics: just overall works better, and of course you can upgrade later.

The first two on this list have on board graphics; I think the Gigabyte one looks best.

so whats wrong with the board I picked? also are you suggesting to have a cheap card for back up instead of getting that board with integrated video? I already have enough clutter and that was one reason that I was liking having that ASUS board. of course the 4670 or its soon to be replacement will be will be used for games. it would be just nice to have the integrated video if I have to RMA my card or if a sell it and am between cards. sorry if you already understood that but I just wanted to be sure we were on the same page.

On board graphics for emergencies & to tide you over between cards makes sense....I Guess I prefer to have discrete spares, have used them myself and to help out friends with PC issues....but, I have room to store stuff...sort of.

Which board did you find that you liked?

sorry that always happens when I copy and paste it from another forum. its working now.

That Asus board looks fine for your needs.

That chipset is good enough for Apple's new machines, should work great.

Why's that? 😕 And the board you posted should be perfectly fine for your needs, keep in mind it is mATX so if you're short on extra space you can get a smaller case.

because I see no reason to get pci-e 1.1 at this point. it is not an issue now but could easily become one next year. I wont be running anything but a single video card so matx is fine. also Im planning on getting an Antec three hundred case.

I have a feeling that board may be out of stock for a long time though so other suggestions are welcome.

A valid point to consider, but if you only plan on using this for 2-3 years I don't think you'll need to really worry about the bandwidth being fully saturated by a standard single slot card. For that much data to be going back and forth would require a monster gpu, or 2 decently powerful ones. More into the realm of budget = non-existant. Look for any similar 730i/GF9300 boards if you feel it'll be out of stock for so long. Next option down is the boards with integrated GF7150's. The 8200's are AMD only.

I bought an Intel DG45ID the other day that I'm going to put my E6600 and 8800GT into this weekend (I'm migrating from ATX to mATX)

I'll probably never use the onboard graphics, but I might need it in an emergency. Plus, it can be used for a 3rd monitor or dedicated TV output, which a spare card can't do unless you hack it to fit a PCI 1x slot.

Also, the onboard NIC is Intel, not Realtek or whatever. AND getting drivers from Intel is easier than downloading from the Taiwanese sites.

Oh yeah, the SATA ports are at the bottom, so they don't get in the way of a long graphics card. I guess that's not a problem if you're doing full ATX
