So title says it all.. just went ahead and bought 15 monoprice zwave door / windows detectors. i have no automation device yet was planing on getting the Samsung smart things v2 but i always read all the bad reviews of every device and worry. ;) So What to get? what do i need. no price limit really just want the something reliable? (IF possible :) )

Also Have basic networked camera system now that i can view on my phone would be nice to upgrade it to 3mp hikvision poe cameras or even 4mp ones but i don't know what NVR to get. i guess if im ok using the zmodo 720p bnc one for past 3 years then..?

Maybe this is wrong forum section and its discussed somewhere over and over sorry if so.

If you have POE cameras then your existing analog NVR won't work. You could simply run NVR software on a PC instead of buying another NVR.

You'd probably get more responses in the home automation section.

Personally, I would go wireless. But if you already have a wired system in place it makes sense to leverage that in your new system if possible. Wiring outdoor cameras can be a pain but wireless should work fine as long as you have a strong wifi signal.

Wireless cameras never made sense to me. If I have to pull power then I might as well pull cat5 too. Or, use poe and only pull cat5. Plus wired is always more reliable. These are surveillance cams after all.

OK well point me to the right place to ask here. Or I can go somewhere else or buy a few and try them all but I'd rather work than try and just buy the best one possible .. wireless sounds like stupid idea since yes need pull power cables so why not put cat7. Or a mixture of the two if easy power in place.

Well, the main point is the fact that wherever you put a wireless camera, there's probably a power socket not far away. I have mostly wired cameras but when I wanted to add a couple for various purposes, it was a lot easier for me use wireless ones.

Wired is of course better quality, but the wireless ones aren't bad especially if you have a wireless access point not far away.
