I figured this was the best section to put this in as im guessing its a app.

So heres the story. Im now semi seeing a girl and her ex boyfriend has contacted me twice this time threatening me. :\ He is living in another city than the two of us and i really dont know how he has gotten my information and knows that i call her and she calls me. I would think that the phone company doesnt allow outside parties, especially individuals, to see this information. So my guess is its some sort of phone app thats allowing him to do this. If this is the case I was wondering what options would she have to keep her privacy by blocking such an app?

Any help appreciated.

If he calls you again make sure you're ready to record the conversation. That's the only advice I can give you.

Does she have an iPhone or Android phone? iPhones typically have to be jailbroken to have monitoring software installed. Android phones are much easier. If it's an Android phone, a factory reset should take care of it.

BUT - let's consider more logical options. Could he know who you are through other sources? Friends? Facebook? Social engineering?

And you definitely need to call the police and do NOT contact him.

Do not reset the phone, evidence will be lost. Call the police and let them take care of it.

call him back and settle it properly. It sounds like this guy can't take a left hook anyway.

A factory reset on my Android phone won't get rid of Cerberus.
The only way to get rid of it is by flashing a ROM over it and how many people know how to do that?

I would advise against this since you could be breaking the law depending on the state. Just do the hard long road approach, go to the police. Yes you will need to spend time to file paperwork and what not, but this way has no consequences and helps protect you.

If they are on a shared plan, or if he knows her login information to the carrier's web site, it's very easy to access the calling records to see who she is calling and who is calling her. If that is the case, simply change the password.

She's using an iphone 5 i believe. I dont think he could know from other sources my number, i think he doesnt even really know who i am except this guy who is calling a girl he likes. He was smart enough to send me a text and im smart enough not to erase it. If i was in the states I would consider going to the police. Unfortunately im in asia and the police really could care less about this sort of thing. Im pretty sure that they arent on some shared plan but that is something I will ask her later on.

Thanks for the replies.

Could be as simple as her not changing the address the phone bill get sent to. If she was living with him, he might have gotten a bill which usually lists all of the calls made.

So unless he has made overt physical threats (if he has, certainly get to a police station), going directly to the police is likely to get your case stuck in a circular file and no one will really care. You and your girlfriend should visit the local courthouse, ask the clerk for forms to request a restraining order, which in almost all districts will include a restraint against contact over telephone.

Then, make sure your girlfriend is not on a shared plan with him, have her change the password on her email accounts and her phone account (you need to do both, if he can access the email he could just get a new password issued)

Then once a restraining order is issued, if he calls again, contact the police. At that point the violation of the restraining order is actionable.

Settings>security>device administrators - uncheck cerberus tick box. That would stop most of its functions wouldn't it?
Also to have cerberus work like that you need to be rooted don't you? It should be pretty easy to just rip out the apk from the file system in that case.

I'm just guessing he knows her username and passwords. She should really consider changing every password at every site she regularly uses.

This is pretty common for a relationship that lasted for a while.

Semi-related question:

What app is best on iOS for recording calls? I don't want to make an account with a 3rd party company BTW. I see that some of the apps want registration to record calls.

I want to record my calls to my carrier and other companies like that. Lots of people get promised things and then then when they sign the contract, the contract is slightly different than was promised.

police in asia (all of asia) are worthless pieces of shit that don't do jack diddily squat unless it involves their protection money not being paid by business owners or writing up traffic tickets.

I guess what I was implying was that if he's in Asian and they're not, then isn't the distance sufficient? Sure I guess I could drop $1500 and fly to China to beat the living shit out of someone, but that's a big enough deterrent.

Of course I'm pretty sure if the OP is asking about this, and he's in Asia, then likely they're all in Asia and so yeah the police won't help you there.

Honestly it depends where you are though. In China, they take crimes pretty seriously. I've heard stories from people I know who got scammed in Shanghai and the police actually got the store owner and the scammer to pay up and return the money. In the US that would NEVER happen. They'd just laugh at you.

Chinese cops are filthy corrupt, worse than most other asian countries. Are your friends foreigners who just happened to be visiting? They really don't give a shit unless it makes the national or international news or involve non-local people (you also have to be non-asian looking for them to give a shit). They also only pay special attention because they don't want national attention into their money laundering and corruption.

But we're really getting off topic here. For the OP, he should tell his gf to get off the shared plan and change all her passwords.

I never said record the conversation. I said be prepared to.

If he starts mouthing off threats again, let the douche bag know that from that moment going forward the conversation will be recorded and can be used against him. At this point the douche bag will either continue mouthing off (which is basically consent), or hang up and never call you again.

Yeah, because the police are going to take the phone into evidence. They won't do jack shit with it until a serious crime happens or you hire a lawyer. Seeing as how neither of us are a LEO or lawyer, maybe just stick to answering the dude's questions and save your internet keyboard expertise for another time.
