hey all!
i am currently upgrading (new m/c) as follows...
amd64 3500+ (90nm? or older newcastle?)

dfi lanparty nforce4 ultra-d
2x256mb kingston dual channel mem
etc.

any recomendations would be great.

but my main concern is my graphics card, there are sooo many munufacturers out there i just dunno where to start! im thinking of a 6800gt pcie.

which manuf. would you suggest? any and all help would, well...help.

Thanx everyone!

Welcome to AT.

Any reason why you're only getting a 2x256mb kit when you can get a gig for $100 or less?

with the ram, i figured id get better quality rather than quantity, after all i have always gotten by playing stuff like H-L2 on max with my ol' rig which had 512.

amd 2800+
512mb ddr400
dfi mobo
geforce3 ti500 64mb

do you think its worth going for cheaper ram and getting more?

with regards to that BFG g-card, it looks sweet! i haven't heard much about BFG though, is it worth the pricetag? i'll do some more research on it for sure.

thanx guys.

with 1gb things will be so much better also whats your budget so we can better help you

well for memory i am willing to pay up to 120, but only if its really worth it,
graphics card, id like to spend in the region of 300 - 380 give or take.
i figured to spend more on the rest of my rig, like my core components such as video card, motherboard and cpu, cause ram is easily upgraded and i can do it at anytime but i am willing to fork out the cash if you think its worth the initial expense?

Personally, I'd save myself $80 -$100 and get an x800xl instead of the 6800gt. Then use the savings towards more ram.

i must admit, i'v never been much of an ati fan myself, but id like to know if you think the x800xl is just a cheap alternative to the 6800gt or if its really on a par, cause the savings would definately be worth looking at if it matches up to the nvidia. but then i still have the problem of which manufacturer to go for?

Take a look at Anand's X800XL article from a few months back. It really is a worthy alternative to the 6800GT, and quite a bit cheaper too. 🙂

thanx 4 all your help guys,
i looked at that rosewill x800xl, looks good, is it a trust worthy brand though? people seem to like the asus aswell, i think its alot more expensive though. i really do like the rosewill though, has anyone had any experience with them? Good, bad?

x800xl vs 6800gt

i had a look at that article and am impressed with the x800xl but my only concern is wether its poor performance in doom3 is a problem that will occur with all the games based around dooms architecture and has the prob been sorted out in the latest driver releases or is it just a glitch in doom?
