HELP - PC turns on without button but won't post

My system has been up and running for several weeks now without incident. Today, I came home to turn it on and it tried to POST. Then - nothing - dead.

So - I start looking into it. I've got it all torn down (MOBO sitting on cardboard, nothing in it but CPU and RAM) and it will not POST. Instead, as soon as I apply power to the PSU, it spins up the CPU fan for about 2 seconds and then dies. Pressing the power on buttons in every combination I can think has no effect.

So - what's the deal?

Here's what I've tried:

  • 2 different power supplies
  • RAM in any combination of slots (even less RAM)
  • Cleared CMOS
  • Different power outlets
  • Removed CPU Fan (in case the bracket was shorting something - didn't see anything

I'm completely out of ideas. It does the same exact thing when I remove the CPU so I don't know if it's CPU related or the MOBO.

I've already RMA's this MOBO once, I;m not sure if I even want a third. Does anyone have any experience with NewEgg when it comes to getting a different board? I know it says return for defective replacement item only but I don't want a third lemon. Also, is there any way to tell what is wrong (i.e. if it's a CPU of MOBO)?

Thanks for any help - THIS SUCKS!

You do have a GPU plugged in?

Nope.

I tried it - same thing. As soon as I power on the PSU the fans spin up (which shouldn't happen) and turns right back off. It does the same thing with or without a CPU.

I'm going to meter the green pole to ground and see if there is a short.

It's not much different that any of the rest of the boards I have - I think it's the board (though that us just a guess)
