I bought Oblivian on a DVD which came with Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. I also patched both with the official and unofficial patches. I also modded Oblivian with two other mods(textures and weather). Everything is fine...no problems until I go to Shivering Isles in the middle of the bay. Kind of amusing, but instead of an island there's a big neon purple thing with yellow signs saying "wtf" and something about meshes. The sound also gives out when I approach the two NPC's standing amidst the signs on the purple blob that's supposed to be the entrance to Shivering Isles. So my character left and continued on to another quest with no problems. How do I fix this and wtf happened????
Thanks for the help.

Probably a problem related to missing models and/or textures from the unofficial patch. Have you read the readme file for the unofficial patch? If I recall correctly there's some details on the procedures to follow in case of missing things like textures and so on (often resulting in purple surfaces or interrogation points floating around where models should be). I haven't touched Oblivion (along with mods and unofficial patches) in about three years or so, so I don't remember by heart, and my Oblivion isn't installed.

So, maybe it's related to that, or if not then maybe a mod you might have installed? If not, then the only other thing that comes to my mind is that you might have forgotten to load the Shivering Isles main file from the launcher? If I recall correctly when you launch the game from the launcher of Oblivion (or from Shivering Isles, can't remember from which .exe or which launcher to launch from, if there's more than one) there should be an option from which you can click checkboxes where some files other than the main game are present (such as mods). Look for that if you haven't, just in case.

Hope it helps (would help more, I used to mod for Oblivion but it's been too long, memory is blurred concerning Oblivion specifically).

This happened to me, I think it is officially broken in this version. There are mods to fix it, but I think technically you can still continue the quest if you find the point. I was able to continue with some mods which gave me enough textures to figure out where to go.

This is usually a conflict among the mods themselves.

I suggest using Oblivion Mod Manager and Wyre Bash if you're going to mod the hell out of Oblivion. I'd also suggest modding the hell out of Oblivion because DAMN that game can be beautiful if you do a full modding.

Primary mods I'm running:
Francesco's
Oscuro's
Mart's Monster Mod
Unofficial Oblivion Patch
Natural Habitat
Living Economy
Bob's Armory
Unique Landcapes
Natural Vegetation

In Oblivion (probably Skyrim too, but I haven't ever bothered to check) a purple object is missing its texture. An object that shows up as the funky yellow "!" is missing its mesh.

You probably made a mistake somewhere installing your mods.

Like others said. Purple means missing texture. I'm another advocate of Wrye Bash to keep all the different mods in order. It takes awhile to figure it out (there's video tutorial on Youtube) but once you do it's an invaluable tool.

It probably was the mods, though I used three of the same ones Daverino used. However, I have never modded a game before, so this was the first attempt. Next time I will use a mod manager. What was really strange(and kind of funny) were the yellow signs all over the purple mountain saying "wtf meshes are missing", like an Easter egg.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is ArchiveInvalidation. If you use mesh/texture replacements without setting the aforementioned variable, it only reads from the default .bsa files that were installed with the game and ignores others. You have two ways to fix it:

A. Download ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated from the TES Nexus and stick it in your load order.

B. Use the ArchiveInvalidation toggle within OBMM.

Either way, you'll want to use BOSS to prevent conflicts. Afterwards, one can use TESEDIT or Wrye Bash if you're looking to combine equipment changes between several mods together into a merged patch.

Oblivion needs lots of modding, imo. Morrowind was on my hard drive ten times longer than the O.

I'd suggest eventually trying the Nehrim total replacement mod. Much better atmosphere, story, and much more difficult.

One question: When I downloaded the texture mods I did not use any mod managers...the mods were put in from 7 zip files (probably not 100% correctly as I have never done this before). Is it possible to download OBMM or Nexus Mod Manager and delete all texture mods and reinstall from Nexus?

I've never used the Nexus Mod Manager but from other users, they say to avoid it and use OBMM.

Where did you install Oblivion? In it's own folder or "Program Files" by default? I've never dealt with the Steam version as I have the actual DVD. If you're planning on modding the hell out of it, it's highly recommended to install the game in the base drive letter (C : \Oblivion or D \ Oblivion, etc.). If you dissect most mods (usually compressed in 7zip or .rar) you'll see that the files are usually organized in the following folders.

Data/ (this is where all .esp files go into)
Data/Meshes/
Data/Textures/

If you look in your "Oblivion" install folder you have a "Data" folder and in that folder you have "meshes" and "textures". Installing mod is essentially sending the appropriate files into their respective folders. If you compare what's already on your computer vs the files to be copied into it, you can pretty much predict which files will be overridden. OBMM and Wrye Bash are two different mod managers that go about automating the task of copying & deleting files from those folders.

Thanks for the reply. I installed Ob in a folder I created on the desktop. I've been playing the game for two months, and the only glitch has been in the Shivering Isles portion of the game. (I should take a screenshot. It looks like an alien spaceship has landed with billboards erected all over it Actually it's quite comical ). And I only used one mod and the unofficial patches for Ob and SI.

There was a mod that let you inspect objects in-game and see where they're coming from.. sorry can't remember the name offhand
