My freakin PC pauses like crazy! like if i move the mouse in circles it would pause all the time. it pauses while i play games and while using any applications. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what the problem might be would be appreciated. BTW i know its a hardware problem cuz i just formated and it still pauses. Im hoping its the ram, but still not sure. Thanks..

virtual memory? Try adjusting it to make the min & max the same. Make it 2.5 time your amount of ram....Windows will stop resizing the swap then.

What 3rd party software do you have loading with Win98?

Try this:
Reboot your computer
When computer is fully up and running, press CTRL-ALT-DEL
Select and choose "End Task" for all items listed EXCEPT: Explorer and Systray

Try moving your mouse now....better?

If you're still experiencing problems, there are other things that it might be, but this is a VERY important first step to take.

Post your results so that we can help more.

Also, a friendly suggestion: In the title, try to be more specific. All posts here are pretty much "problems"....maybe something like "PC keeps hesitating/pausing"

Kay i tried running nothing but explorer and systray and it still pauses. I havent tried the virtual memory setting yet, but i was using that before i formatted and figured that couldve been a problem so i just let windows manage it now. Any other suggestions would be greatful! thanks!

is it the irq sharing problem, where everything are fighting over a single irq while the rest are free?

what about HDD translation method; did u change it from when you first partitioned it (this would be a HDD access problem that would be causing jerkiness)?

DMA (again HDD access problem)?

um...hmmm...what else...

When i just formatted, i partitioned into 2drives. but prior it was only one drive. it paused before and still does now. i am running it in DMA mode now and before.. should i uncheck DMA?

no, i havent tried that, but i just lowered my cpu speed to 550 and it seems to be running fine now. tempature is below 40c now, so i guess my cpu is not being cooled efficently. my mouse isnt pausing anymore. is it possible though? because its not being cooled enough that its causing my system to pause/spike?

btw i bought a p3 733 fcpga, using a asus fc to slot 1 conversion kit.

it's possible...an undercooled cpu can cause the system to lock up completely

what was the cpu temp before?
how did u clock it down, fsb or multiplier?
maybe u could adjust cpu drive strength in BIOS setup...
